I finally have babies, but........

drasticplastic Jun 15, 2010 11:28 PM

Two have already died so far. Both were albinos and were seemingly healthy a few hours before. Mother is an albino and father is a triple het moonglow, she gave me 28 babies between 230am to 745am today. I woke up this morning and put them in their individual tubs, and when I got home from work two were dead. Neither one of them had yolk bellies or anything that looked abnormal. There are a few more I'm concerned about as well, two more albinos, one sunglow and one hypo. But on the bright side, mom is doing fine and the rest of litter seems to be doing fine other than they looked really dry when I got home, I sprayed them a little with warm water and I'm going to keep a close eye on them the next few days. Any tips you guys want to share, or a guess as to what happened with the two albinos? Thanks in advance and I'll get pics up after they shed.

First off congrats on your litter and sorry for your loss. I would suggest keeping the babies together until after they shed...this was a learning experience for me as well. I didnt loose any snakes but I still have some snakes that have eaten but havent shed because of this from my second litter this year...the recent litters I have had I have kept together until they shed out.

If an animal is weak the others touching it somehow can keep it holding on.

If you can I would say put them back together and keep them moist. I spray mine down in the morning before work when I get home from work as well as before bed and change their paper atleast once a day.

Hope you have success with them!

Hey Brandon, thanks for the advise. I went ahead and put them all together in the same tub and I have to tell you this. I don't know if it was a coincidence or not, but opening up the individual tubs I found another albino on it's side but still breathing. I put it with the others to see what would happen and within a minute it curled around the other boas in the tub, I hope it pulls through but it was very interesting to watch. Anyway, I took a pic of them in the tub, and thanks again for the advise. (sorry for the bad pic)

If it is the one baby towards the top on the right that is an albino, it does look bad don't it. We hope it pulls through but not to drag your spirits down but ones like that we have seen usually don't make it.

Great advice from Brandon. Change their paper towels once in the morning and once before bed and make sure to spray them with warm water a few times a day. We too keep all our babies together until they shed. If it is a bigger litter we sometimes will split them in half but really we like to keep them together. Congrats and good luck with the rest.

I also keep them together into the shed . For the record , I've had 4 Albino litters , and have lost 1 or 2 Albinos in almost each of them .

Now do you guys keep them together until the last one sheds,or do you pull them as they shed?

We wait until each and every one of them shed as they seem to really benefit from the more of their brothers and sisters laying around. Keep them altogether until they shed, about 7-14 days on average. Once they all shed then you can start sexing them and separating them. Hope this helps.
