Good point-n-shoot?

lbenton Jun 16, 2010 01:33 PM

I am fed up with my current point-n-shoot. I know they never keep up with a nice high end SLR, but the right one will do a mighty fine job. I was hoping to find one that will a better job than what I put up with right now....

Seems the key points to get the job done are:

1 - Macro, just a general weakness of anything that is autofocus only.

2 - Shooting photos at night, best ones will use a modest flashlight to let you focus on the animal and rely on the flash to get the picture.

3 - Speed / blurring... the subjects of our shoots will often jerk or move at the last moment making you get a blurry shoot or the camera will hesitate after the button is pushed and you will get a picture of where the animal was or your own feet as you move the camera to look at it.

I got a Canon SX 220 IS last fall and really like it. 20x built-in zoom(AWESOME), 12 megapixels, SteadyShot, good low-light capability, swivel screen, good macro, and enough features to fool around with (variable shutter speed, HDR bracketing, etc) to let you take some cool shots.

It has one custom mode which lets you save your favorite settings. I use mine as my "night herping" mode, with the flash intensity lowered etc.

The only Point n Shoots I like are the Fujis that have manual setting options but I don't know well their macro functionality works. I own a Fuji F30 as my point and shoot.
