Out The Front Door, Lost Forever?

pyromaniac Jun 17, 2010 08:15 PM

This afternoon I decided to build a bigger habitat for my toads, which involves a new lid made out of 1/2 inch hardware cloth. I had just the pieces I need on top of my big screen cages for my larger snakes, to keep the roof door from getting pushed in should a cat jump on top of the cage. Well, when I went to take the wire off Gonzo's cage and replace it with a better stronger material, I noticed the two little latches that keep the roof door closed were ajar, and the lid was open a bit. So I did a meticulous roust of the cage but alas, no Gonzo! Aw..many laments and cuss words!!!! My biggest tamest prettiest Pacific gopher has ESCAPED! And the front door near the cage has been open all day. I searched the cabin but felt futile, like searching for a drowned sailor on board the ship he fell off of. Then several hours later I looked in the ivy that grows next to the front steps, thinking just maybe she was in there, however unlikely after all this time.

And there stretched out next to the steps in this ivy I saw her big stout middle! Once I got her out of the ivy she wrapped herself around my hand and stayed like that for an hour. Finally my arm got really tired so I returned her to her home, with some major improvements to the roof door. The bulls have the same type cage so I upgraded their door security, too.

An ironic twist to this story; earlier in the day before I had noticed the escapee, I had released my three wild caught gopher snakes over at my friend's house, since he has a major gopher infestation, and no cats. Being wild I expect them to do very well there. Plush pampered Gonzo I would not expect her to make it in the wild so I am very happy I found her.

Petey the cat checks her out. Behind her is the ivy porch tangle.

Your news worried me there for a minute Pyro, but finding that gopher again (against most odds) is a happy ending. WHAT A CATENIFER! How old is he?

pyromaniac Jun 17, 2010 08:46 PM

Gonzo is a she (thought she was a he when first got her) and she was hatched August 24, 2008. She weighs over 600 grams. She is more like a king snake in wanting to wrap tightly around my hand than like my other pits, who like to move from hand to hand.

That's awesome growth for a not quite two-year-old gopher. If catenifer typically looked like that, they would occupy a prominent corner of the gopher market. What is her linage?

I don't know her lineage. She was presented as Pacific gopher when I bought her in December 08 from a retailer in Lodi. She is twice as big as my other pair of cb 08 Pacifics, who were hatched in October of 08. When I bought her I also got her brother, but he died of chronic regurgitation ( I have lost nobody to this since; learned the hard way). When I called the retailer to find a replacement for the lost male, he didn't seem to recall even selling me these snakes, like maybe he had a Senior Moment or something.

Gonzo's motto is "We don't need no stinkin brumation!" She eats once a week year round like clockwork, only pausing for blue.

Man, ya got me bummed-out there for a second. Great story, happy ending. What a snake!

First thing I did when I got up this morning was check to see that she was still in her cage. There she was all nestled in her nest very cozy. I think it was operator error on my part that led to the latches not being properly secured before. Whatever, now there is an extra step to securing the door, so I am optimistic I will be dropping no more stitches.

I totally dig those colors.

Thanks! She is a special girl for sure!

I think the snake gods granted me a break yesterday because I released the three wc ones in gopher snake paradise ( my friend's gopher infested rural property). They had not really been happy campers in captivity, and were ecstatic to be able to go down a real gopher hole on a warm June day.

Don't let that one out of your sight!
That's a great-looking Pituophis.

Thanks! This was a refresher lesson on cage security!

Beautiful snake, glad you luckily managed to find it. Those colours are really reminiscent of vertebralis & bimaris.

The man I got her from was known for being to mixing subspecies, so possibly she does have some other genes in there besides just Pacific. She is so huge for her age and is not like any other Pacific I have ever seen, who knows? The man has retired, so I guess I will never know.

Glad that story has a happy ending. Gonzo is truly an exceptional looking Gopher.

One of the best looking Pituophis I've seen... of any subspecies. Pretty beastly too!

There is sort of a Murphy's Law concerning escaped snakes; it will always be the one you would most hate to lose that goes missing...

pyromaniac Jun 19, 2010 06:00 PM

Thanks! I was numb with despair when she went missing, and after finding her I felt giddy with relief! LOL!
