Honduran milksnake average sizes?

skincity702 Jun 17, 2010 10:22 PM

I have a female vanishing hypo that is 1018 grams and paired her up with a male that is even bigger at 1100 grams. They are not fat and the female laid 9 eggs a week ago. My question is how large is considered large? Many of the snakes I see on kingsnake aren't near the size of the two that I have. You guys are the experts so I figured it was the best place to ask

Hondurans have quite a range in size. There is also the arguement that there are some questions about which ones are pure Hondos. But I have heard of some reaching 6 feet and have seen adults top out at 4 feet. I'm sure some one else here can give you more specific measurements than this, but I think this is a generally accurate assesment.

I have quite a few Hondurans. I don't do weights, but some of my adult proven breeder males are three feet or less. I have a female that is about to turn 22 years old - she is five feet long. I've seen some that Norm Damm has that were six feet. But on average I'd say they're four feet. I don't recommend breeding female Hondurans until they're at least 3-1/2 feet.

From what I have read the sizes vary drastically. One of my attractions to hondos was their size. Is their any advantage to breeding for size and color? I've always thought that larger snakes were more adaptable and hardy. The pair that I have is exceptional in color and genetics. The male is het for a stripe and I have personaly seen his brother who has a very distinct stripe. The female is a very bright clean vanishing hypo and given their sizes (both over 5' long) I would say their genetics are pretty good. Like I said before people on the forum would know more than I do so I leave it to you. Thanks for the info,
Jt

Good luck on the Het Stripe...I have dozens of Aberrant Hondo's and there is certainly no guarantees regarding siblings being striped and passing it on. Just when I think I have it figured out, I get a clutch of normals. Anyway, size-wise, my largest Hondo is just a hair over 6 foot, but 4 foot is a good sized snake.

Large parents could be a plus when trying to sell the babies. I'm sure it may help some people to choose when picking out offspring. Post some pics if you can. Here are my Hondos, still young but growing fast. Male first then the two females.

I don't think size matters in Hondos. I have three footers that are just as tame as larger ones. Nelsons and Mexican Milks have smaller average adult sizes than Hondurans and they're perhaps the tamest Milk Snakes out there. And large adults don't necessarily have large babies. Below is a pic of one of my Hondurans laying 13 eggs and one laying 3. These are the typical clutch sizes over the years for these two particular snakes.

I like the Larger Hondos, but I don't use size alone to make a decision. I look at color and pattern first then size may play a part in picking one over another. I think that's one of the cool attributes of the Hondos is that many do reach large size. But that's just me. I don't even know how big the parents are to the trio I have I was more interested in the genetics, but it would be even nicer if they reach 6 feet.

Hey here are the pics. My male is in shed right now he's usually much more red. He has some markers that show he carries the gene for stripe. The female was in her nesting box and she is eating in the photo. Let me know what you think. I think a vanishing stripe would be awesome. Not sure if they have even been produced yet. The guy I bought this pair from is working on am amel stripe and has some in the incubator as I write this. There are a lot of killer morphs to come.

Yeah the female is gorgeous. Her sister has even less black on her. That male though is almost a blood red and black. It's just a crappy pic lol
