Ravenswood, W.Va.: A missing python, loose in the city of Ravenswood for three weeks earlier this year, has led city leaders to formulate a new ordinance restricting ownership of exotic animals within city limits.
At their regular meeting Tuesday night, city council members conducted the first reading of an ordinance that prohibits ownership of any exotic animals without first obtaining a license or permit and paying a fee to the city.
The new ordinance follows a three-week ordeal that began in May when town resident Ty Donohew discovered his nine-foot python had gone missing from his Gallatin Street home.
Despite assurances that the snake wouldn't fatally attack people or pets, surrounding residents were left on edge and fearful.
"Until we found it, it was awful," Mayor Lucy Harbert said of the saga.
In the end, the snake was found underneath a neighbor's house, having apparently succumbed to cold overnight temperatures within a few days of going missing.
Harbert said the new resolution came to be after residents reported Donohew purchased a new pet snake.
