Incubator ambient humidity?

GregBennett Jun 18, 2010 08:24 PM

What do you guys think is a good incubator ambient humidity?

I've got some eggs in the incubator from an albino to het albino breeding and I'm losing a couple of them every so often. A few are sweating kind of bad.

My ambient humidity is around 92-97%. Readings are from 2 different digital humidity gauges.

Incubator temps are around 81.3-82.5 degrees.

I used a mix of about 1:2 - water and vermiculite by weight. I use around 300 grams of vermiculite to 150 grams of water.

I made up a new mix last night with a little less water and put a 1/2" or so of Perlite over the vermiculite to raise the eggs off the vermiculite.

What do guys think?

I have other clutches in the same incubator that look great compared to these albino eggs.

Mine stays between 70-80% and I cook at about the same temps as you do. Never had any problems like you mention.

Are you talking about ambient humidity in the entire incubator, or in each individual container?

It's one of the reasons I never really worry about the humidity in the incubator as a whole, and just worry about each container. That way, if I get a clutch that seems to act a little differently, I can adjust it in that particular container and it doesn't effect anything else. I find it interesting actually, I can mix the exact ratio of water to perlite, put eggs from the same species but different clutches in different containers, and they don't all react the same way.

Entire incubator.

My containers have small holes in them. They are the pre-punched 6" deli type containers.

Hi Greg,
I do not worry at all about the humidity inside the incubators... We use closed systems over here... Even if there are a couple of holes punched in the container, I still consider it a closed system...

Personaly, I make sure my containers do not have any holes and if there are, I just tape them up...

As some of you may know, I use only SIM containers to incubate eggs... Whats goo is that you can run your substrate pretty wet without worrying about killing your eggs... The humidity level in my containers is up at 98%... The difference being is, they are not sitting in a damp substrate,,,
