A rack for my closet?

SBTNoir Jun 19, 2010 01:57 PM

I am looking for a rack for med size snakes that would fit in a typical condo/apartment sliding door closet. The rack would need to be wider as it is more shallow. The cages or rack needs to be no more than 21" deep. Any idea of if a rack like this exists? I am not the type of person to build my own.

If this does not exist I think this would be very marketable for all those people with apartments who want their snake enclosures neatly tucked away.

Hopefully something like this already exists, let me know if you are aware of any, thank you!!

Many rack mfgrs sell racks where the boxes slide in width-wise. This means the rack depth is limited, usually to about 19 inches or thereabouts. Although not the best approach for a rack, it does solve the depth issue if you want a drawer-style lidless rack.

Another possibility (non-rack) depending on the animals housed is the Vision Visionarium. They are only 12 inches deep, have front-access sliding doors and stack easily. Very nice cages. You can use bottom or overhead heat, even when stacked. They really did a practical design with those, and the price is right.

I have a few rosies in Vision 111s. Those are only 12 inches deep and stack. I got those exactly for that reason - they are depth limited. I didn't want a cage sticking out 24 inches in the room they are in. The 111 is a nice cage, roomy enough for many kings/milks/sandboas if that is your application. But the Visionarium is a better price for the same size.

The pic is what I mean - small metal shelves, 12 inch deep cages. Cheap, easy, fits anywhere.

If you have tubs that are the appropriate size, you can contact Animal Plastics and they will custom make a rack for you.

I would custom make your own rack. it will save money and allow you do build it to your needs. I made one out of melamine and it was really easy. It is a little heavier than the nice plastic racks you can order, but it will cut the cost in half.

You may actually spend more money in melamine racks in the long run because they sag and warp over time whereas if you invested in quality plastic racks, they'd last you darn near a lifetime. Plus you would have to send more time and energy cleaning and taking care of a melamine rack as opposed to a plastic rack. You'd go through more melamine than you would plastic given the same quantity of time. Melamine is just the cheap route. Why not invest quality housing for your quality reptiles? Think about it, when you go to the grocery store, do you pick paper or plastic? There are a lot of people out there that call themselves herpers that want to cram as many snakes into a space for as cheaply as they can possibly get away with. I think they are just thinking about dollar signs and not necessarily the well being of their animals. What does that say about a person?

So, what brand of plastic cages do you sell?? That was quite a pitch...I use Melamine and have never had a problem, as have many others here. Maybe tone it down a bit. Just saying.

I don't sell cages. Most people are too cheap to afford them even if I did. Hollow core pvc is my personal preference as well as some of the best zoos and museums in this country. People that are able to recognize excellence also agree that hollow core pvc is the best available material to use for reptile facilities.

It is the best for facilities. But the average herp hobbiest can't spend that kind of money. Thats why we are in the "cage & habitat design" forum. I make my racks out of threaded rod and a material i get from a sign shop. I'm not sure what it is called but it is like a plastic "cardboard" with a thin sheet of metal on either side
