eggbound???

superkruemelchen Jun 20, 2010 03:09 AM

Hey guys,

i am a little bit worried about my mexican hognose.
I am not sure if she is eggbound.
She is very thick and since 2 days it looks like the eggs are in front of the cloaca. Last shed was about 14 days. It is her first breeding time.
What do you think? Would you wait the next 1-2 days or go to the vet.

Thank you,
Nicole

Thats a tough call Nicole... Personally, I would wait it out... From what I understand it can take more than 2 weeks after prelay before they lay... Other species I have bred went long periods of time after prelay before laying...

Maybe give a rundown of the nesting you are offering, temps, weight and size of your female and so on...

The cause of egg binding is not always clear cut as there are a few factors and causes and can be hard to pinpoint...

Improper nesting, dehydration, stress, and being too small in size are just a few reasons why reptiles become egg bound...

I agree with Gregg...some females can take longer then 14 days to begin laying eggs after the prelay shed, and it would be best to reduce all possible stress at this time so your female can do what she is supposed to. Give it more time.

Damn....i was too fast...

yesterday she laid one egg, i was so happy....but there came no other egg since 24 hours. She has no stress, temperature is between 28 and 32 C°. How long can it take to lay eggs? (

Was the first egg a slug or was it fertile?? I have had snakes lay infertile eggs one at a time over a period of a week or so.

I still think she could lay a good clutch. Sometimes they hold onto them for some reason. I personally wouldn't be taking drastic measures yet. Let us know how it turns out.

You could make matters worse or actually cause a situation by transporting her to a vet to be poked and proded...

I have had some females do this also. Sometimes they have been bad but sometimes good but usually in a few days they have laid the rest of their eggs without any problems. Hope everything goes ok for you
