Screws in Heat Tape

jmartin104 Sep 23, 2003 12:32 PM

I need to run 11" heat tape down the back of my rack. Each shelf is attached to the back by two screws. Will screwing through the heat tape cause it to quit working?

It will still work, but now you will have electric current running through the screw, which isn't the best thing to have. If you have to screw through it, make sure its through just plastic and not any metal. Or just use tape like they reccomend.

Thanks! I had some 3" tape and just ran two strips of that. It works fine.

Putting screws through the Flexwatt will not cause it to stop working as long as the screws do not sever the conductors running along the sides of the Flexwatt. Anywhere within 1" of each edge is fine. BUT like the other poster said, those screws then potentially will be live and capable of shocking you or shorting if they happen to touch a grounded object.

They sell plastic screw covers that encase the screw, but you have to remember to shut off the heater before screwing in the screws.

What about using a few nails that you can countersink and cover with silicon?
