Well I had a good morning because when I checked the incubator, I found these two little darling albinos in their deli cup! Their mom is a het who had gotten ill during breeding season (bacterial infection) and stopped laying. I though she was done for the season, but after she was well and fat again, she decided to lay one last clutch on August 6. The eggs looked good but a couple days later I noticed one had sprung a small leak, and some of the inside of the egg had leaked out. The egg stll looked firm and fertile, so I just left it alone. The bit that leaked out molded, but the egg itself stayed white and firm. I didn't touch it at all, I was afraid I'd rupture the egg. I really did not expect it to hatch, but today---two beautiful healthy albinos! One is a little smaller than the other, but both are normal sized.
You know, the interesting thing about hets is that a 50%-50% chance had a 50%-50% chance with every egg. Sounds like stating the obvious but the interesting thing is that EVERY hatchling from that het group this year is albino. Now this is the group that got a bacterial infection not too long after the season started, and so they stopped production, so I only got 5 or so hatchlings from the group, but still- all of them are albinos. I'm assuming it's just luck. Though I imagine if someone was testing an animal to see if it was het, and they got all normals they might think it wasn't het...just goes to show you it's not always a 50/50 split in reality.
Here are some pics of my little miracles:
I think this pic is cute, looks like they are reading
the ingredients
On the right side of the top egg you can see some of the good that leaked out a few days after eggs were laid
