Pretty interesting.
Consider this measuring method:

I have done that very same method with a good number of snakes in the past as well, and it does indeed work great!

A pool table also works very well for that!

great idea. ill try that. sounds easier than having two people hold it straight and trying to measure it with string. The snake would probably like it better too. heres another picture I forgot I had.

Geez, that is a whopper head! How about some pics of you holding it instead of it holding you

I tried the laying the snake next to a wall and let it streach out trick, and that works much better than trying to hold it down. but to my dismay, the snake is only 7' 1'' on the dot. sorry for my false original post.

I hope you're ashamed of yourself!!!
nice snake
7'1" is very impressive...won't be long before it hits the 7'3" mark.

For one, thanks for the pic, for two, thanks for carefully measuring it and for three, WOW!!!

As for a 2 or 3 inch discrepancy, I suspect that unless it's anesthetized or dead you'll never get a truly reliable measurement even if the snake cooperates, and a 2-3% (as is the case in your very minor miscalculation) tolerance range could be expected. This is because the snake will always have some capacity to either traction or compress its vertebral column. - No science here, just my guess.

I found this black rat skin in my yard a couple of years ago. Skin was dry when I found it laying on the ground. I don't know its true length, but it must have been a big snake.

I found one crossing the road many years ago that looked like a log from far away as I got closer I noticed the log was disapearing into the grass. I speeded over to it and the thing was so big I was afraid to grab it, but I knew I had to cause it was mostly in the grass by then. I snatched it and it was definately the thickest Yellow I had ever seen. About as thick as my arm, no lie. I never actually measured it but it was huge. I was most impressed with it's girth than it's length but I would guess at least 6 feet. But boy was he hefty. I wish I had taken pics of him, I don't remember if I did but I can't find any.

I found one many years ago in S. Georgia on a coastal island that measured 7'2", when placed next to a measuring tape. Poor guy must have had some bad luck sometime - he only had one eye and heavy scarring on his body (maybe a cat got a hold of him?)!
Where'd you find yours?
