Stuck shed

dragonzncornz Jun 21, 2010 02:55 PM

I have acquired someone else's dragons as they are getting out of breeding. It appears that one of the dragons has a very hard spot of stuck shed on his head/nose. I have been soaking him but it is not coming off. Can I put a thin layer of neosporin on it to help soften it up?

Since you don't have a lot of history on the animal I would leave it alone for now. I may very well just not be ready to come off yet, and premature pealing could cause damage to the scales and skin underneath.

Ok will do. It just looks so uncomfortable on him. There is a spot that is a little bloody too, that is why I figured it was an old shed. He has it really stuck in his beard too. Poor guy, he wasn't under uvb or a heat light that was warm enough for a while, no signs of mbd thank goodness. A little under weight and very thirsty the first night we brought him home. I think he is happy though, bobbing and bearding at me. Coloring up nicely.

I would mist that area a couple of times a day and I think it should loosen up. It looks like there could be more than one layer there?

Yah that is what I was thinking. At first I wondered if it was fungus and shed. But after giving him a bath I think it is just shed. I will moisten it down a few times a day and hopefully it will be off by this weekend.

Misting it will do the trick....it's very common to have uneven sheds with some sticking on a leg or the head. It actually looks very loose in that pic, like it's just about to come off. The small red mark looks to be a bite mark....he was probably with another dragon that bit him or got a cut some other way. In which case a tiny amount of antibiotic cream could help. It will heal on it's own most likely, but if you put any cream on it,do so after the skin shed comes off, otherwise don't mist as it [ the medicine ] will trickle down in to his mouth. Something else you can use for a small sore of any type is unpasteurized honey. It's a natural anti-bacterial/ antibiotic and works to heal very quickly.

Believe me it isn't loose at all. It is really on there. I wondered if the mark was a bit but thought it was from the shed since it was so close to it. He was housed with 2 females. I have him by himself now. I think he is adorable, and cant wait to see what he really looks like in a few days.
