Sad to see

DMong Jun 22, 2010 12:03 AM

I was walking my little miniature Wire-haired Dachshund a couple weeks ago about 12:30 am, and saw this in the street from about 75 feet away. As I got a bit closer, I could see that it was probably a cornsnake.

Sure enough, upon closer inspection, it was a very uniquely colored specimen that got hit by a car in the road. I picked it up and flung it over into the nearby grass so I could get my camera and at least get a photo for documentation purposes.

I live on a very narrow barrier island on the east coast of central Florida, so this was a very isolated form of corn that has a very interesting lighter coloration than the other mainland form of corn in this area, as I have seen a pretty fair number of the mainland types. This one reminded me of a "rosy rat" phenotype from the Florida Keys area.

Too bad I couldn't have been walking a bit earlier and have captured this guy alive and well.

It didn't take the fire ants long to find it either, as it was covered by the time I saw it. The dark patches on it are the ants that were still clinging to it even after I picked it up and threw it into the grass.....geez!

would have made a nice unique addition to a collection.

That is sad! But it doesn't look squished either.... and I def. Don't miss the fire ants from nc. I think that's the only thing I hate about the south....

Yeah, it didn't look as bad as many other's that get ran over, but it was enough internal trauma to end it's life in short order. The hemipenes were pushed out too. Apparently the car's tire also sexed it for me!..LOL!

Yes, too bad things weren't different there.

Woe that was a super nice specimen! I really like the colors. The yellows are quite strong. It is sad to see them like that when they are so pretty.

Yes, it was indeed a male. It certainly does have a very "rosy"(rosacea) look to it. That's what I found so interesting about this one.

A very subdued head chevron too.

Yeah, I remember you had some of those guys. I used to have some nice one's too.

What's really different is this one was found on Satellite Beach, just south of Cape Canaveral on the east coast of Florida.

I would just LOVE to find a pair like this, but the odds of it would be higher than hitting the lottery I'm afraid..LOL!

Hey!, I can dream though, right??..LMAO!

Anyway, yes, it was real disappointing to see such a unique colored one for this area freshly killed like that.
