I was walking my little miniature Wire-haired Dachshund a couple weeks ago about 12:30 am, and saw this in the street from about 75 feet away. As I got a bit closer, I could see that it was probably a cornsnake.
Sure enough, upon closer inspection, it was a very uniquely colored specimen that got hit by a car in the road. I picked it up and flung it over into the nearby grass so I could get my camera and at least get a photo for documentation purposes.
I live on a very narrow barrier island on the east coast of central Florida, so this was a very isolated form of corn that has a very interesting lighter coloration than the other mainland form of corn in this area, as I have seen a pretty fair number of the mainland types. This one reminded me of a "rosy rat" phenotype from the Florida Keys area.
Too bad I couldn't have been walking a bit earlier and have captured this guy alive and well.
It didn't take the fire ants long to find it either, as it was covered by the time I saw it. The dark patches on it are the ants that were still clinging to it even after I picked it up and threw it into the grass.....geez!
would have made a nice unique addition to a collection.
