Strange egg retention and cure!

BuzzardBall Jun 22, 2010 09:35 PM

I've had hogs get egg bound on me before and have had both good and bad luck! All of those cases were eggs right at the cloaca and were palpated! However, this years case was weird! About three days ago, this female lays 3 eggs and obviously had more in her! These were way up towards the head, about 3 inches down! I let her go and watched closely! Last night I was going through the gravid females and feeding them! I wondered about my eggbound girl? I offered and she took it! I figured (hoped) that maybe the prey item might help move things along! Well, this afternoon, I found 1 regurged mouse AND 2 deformed eggs! I wasn't too happy about the regurge, but was relieved that she passed the obstruction and lived! Anybody else experience a "high retention"?

Are you sure she hadn't eaten the eggs? I have had this happen on more than one occasion and it looks just as you described.

I would second the notion about your female having eaten those eggs as the ovaries are not part of the digestive tract and could not have traveled through the intestine and into the stomach. You can check out a diagram of a female snakes anatomy here:

I hope that is helpful.

I guess anything is possible! However, I don't think they were, as they were a mess! They looked like bad eggs! BTW, even though I got a D in biology, I realize that the ovaries are not part of the digestive track! LOL
