I like how these are so calm right out of the egg.

They certainly are big for just hatchlings! What sort of pituophis are they?

donv Jun 23, 2010 11:19 PM

Yup, big eggs and big hatchlings. They are northern pines. Had a few clutches of black pines a few years back and the hatchlings were just as big, just fewer eggs. Those are the only two I've bred but I'm guessing bullsnakes come out huge as well.

Beautiful baby northerns there!
Now I want another one!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks. Funny, my original mindset was to sell all of them, until they started hatching. Now I need to figure out what I want to hang on to.

Congrats! All nice northerns but that one is especially sweet. I really like the reduced saddle size - gonna be looker that one is!

Great looking babies. Some nice contrast going on there. Hope you'll post shots of the other 6 as they pop out.

donv Jun 24, 2010 01:10 PM

Thanks, just noticed two of them have distinct blue on their heads. It's more prominent on this one.

donv Jun 24, 2010 01:14 PM

A little blurry but you can see the blue.

Very cool, I guess we'll see if that blue fades as expected?

I particularly like that bold pattern on the head/eyes of that last one, stunning.

donv Jun 25, 2010 10:56 AM

Picking a holdback or two will be tough. Lots of interesting variation between individuals.

DISCERN Jun 24, 2010 05:36 PM

I have seen that on many baby northerns. It will go away, but yea, it is noticeable at first.

Thanks for the info. This is my first clutch of northerns and besides a pair I bought and some occasional hatchlings at shows I haven't seen to many babies. I was wondering if the blue would even last past the first shed.

DISCERN Jun 25, 2010 10:58 AM

Aren't the babies just beautiful? My all-time favorite snake, and now, I gotta go feed some! haha!

I'm with you on that. For me its a toss up btwn my northerns, tiger rats and FWC. Yeah, I'm feeding the northerns today as well, boy do they metabolize food fast!

mattkau Jun 24, 2010 06:18 PM

Very nice. I look forward to the day when I can enjoy some little northerns, besides the pair I bought a few months ago.

Thanks. I find these to be intelligent, at least on the snake scale. My adults seem to think before they act (well, if I compare them to a kingsnake this holds true). Great snakes to handle.

championjeep Jun 24, 2010 10:52 PM

Its always nice opening the container and seeing some newly hatched babies. I should have 7 babies hatching next month.
