Will the moon effect herping?

BlakeMolone Jun 23, 2010 02:53 PM

Im going to be leaving next tuesday for Comstock to go hunt Juno Road and the moon is going to be full so I was just wondering if that will significantly lower snake movement?

Thanks a lot guys!

The moon effect herp movement more so far out West. It doesn't seem to hinder movement toward the East, at least this is my experience. I have seen alterna several times during the full moon, but only Sanderson and East back toward Del Rio.

BlakeMolone Jun 23, 2010 03:24 PM

ok good! Does it seem to affect other snakes?

alterna63 Jun 23, 2010 03:40 PM

I think the moon does to some degree but you will always have wayward snakes coming out no matter what the weather is doing. That has always been my experience. Have a great time!!

Is this Bloke Malone dude a real person who is just young and naïve or is it Bob Sloan pulling your guys' chains???

BlakeMolone Jun 24, 2010 12:41 AM

Yes he is a real person and he is definitely not Bob Sloan.

If it was B.S. there would be an effort to fluff up a story, undermine another herper or explain why B.S. is really a great guy that nobody understands and all the history he has created are just lies by other "old timers".... Oh, and there would be an albino something or the other involved.

BlakeMalone seems like a real person to me, just not somebody that has had a chance to put in much real time herping yet and has plenty of questions to get himself started.. we have all been there, just that for some of us it was a long time ago.

Sorry if somehow I seemed fake. This will be my second trip out to the transpecos and my first serious herp trip out there.

BlakeMolone Jun 24, 2010 11:08 AM

Ill be at outback oasis next week so maybe lll see someone from the alterna forum.

ALTERNA63 Jun 24, 2010 10:10 AM

Yeah, i do not see that any more because my old e-mail is asscoiated with kingsnake.com. I need to get that changed. Posting here is the best way.

BlakeMolone Jun 24, 2010 10:55 AM

Ok well I was just going to ask what roads in Valverde or Terrel county will usualy produce a good number of herps? I was planning on hunting Juno but Ive heard its a really low activity road and id love to see an Alterna but anything out there is new to me. My main targets are probably lepidus and red coacwhips.
Thanks!

gratefuldead Jun 24, 2010 01:46 PM

...everything you need to know about herping that area. I'll send you a PM over on the field forum...

lbenton Jun 24, 2010 07:07 AM

The moon will impact movement but not as much as weather. You also have to remember that if it is overcast or if the moon rises late or sets early you can have the same "dark" condtions. I would advise that if you try to look for herps under a full moon you focus more on their "comfort zones" like rock outcrops etc... I feel they are less likely to venture out into open areas like crossing a road at these times. Also, back to rock outcrops, it seems that if you compare the ones that are in direct moonlight to those that are more in the "shade" so to speak will have less activity on them.... or that could just be my bias since I over the years have focused my efforts more on the outcrops that would be in the "shade" when there is a lot of moon up.

Oh wow never would have thought of that thanks!

a153fish Jun 25, 2010 04:54 PM

Never been hunting for Alterna but have hunted for corns and whatever else I can find and yes, full moons makes the snakes feel vulnerable because there's plenty of light. Loking in their comfort zones is excellent advice.

You cant see Graybands from your couch at home. Full moon, half moon, no moon, all moon, go out and have fun. I have observed Alterna on full moons, rain, no wind, 15-20mph wind... The only constant is that you will never see great stuff if you dont get out of the house.

Go have fun. Leave the tongs and hooks at home.

Best Wishes and Good Luck!

I'll put money on it that there won't be any snakes moving the night that moon comes out.
