Anyone with hurricane motleys?

shadylady Jun 23, 2010 09:23 PM

Wondering about the genetics of hurricane motleys. Can it be bred for or is it just a hit and miss type of thing?

I'll try to get pics later, but my yearling male lavender motley has turned opal-colored with thin dark lavender rings around his spots. The yellow is coming in under his neck and is halfway down his body. Can hardly wait to see how he turns out in the next year or two.

I'll try to get pics, but he doesn't like me and just ate two hoppers.

The "hurricane" trait is a selectively bred motley trait, and in itself isn't a true simple recessive thing like the actual motley gene itself is.

So in effect, that one bred to a typical motley wouldn't mean all the offspring would actually be "het" for hurricane. But if you bred a hurricane to a hurricane, you would greatly inprove your odds of doing so, but it still wouldn't guarantee they would all be of that type. This is sort of like how the extreme hypo gene works in Hondurans.

Sounds like you have a real sweet one there, good luck with whatever your plans are with it!
