Pink Cottonmouths

e&t Sep 23, 2003 02:18 PM

I recently acquired a pair of baby cottonmouths. They have a very pretty purple-ish/pink hue to them. Has anybody ever worked with this color phase? Is this something that will stick around into adulthood and breed true or is will it shed out in a few months? I have never seen this color on cottonmouths and was just curious if any of you have experienced it. I am a computer moron so posting a pic is highly unlikely! If you really want to see the color I can probably email you one or snail mail one if you REALLY want to see them.

Very doubtful that the color and pattern will persist into adulthood. The coloration you describe is not necessarily unusual for newborn cottonmouths. They look very similar to copperheads when young, but cottonmouths almost always fade/darken quickly with age. Depending on the particular species, they may end up with little or no trace at all of a pattern when they reach adulthood, ending up instead as plain black or dark brown snakes (or nearly so).
