Trouble giving birth, should I worry?

AbsoluteApril Jun 23, 2010 10:49 PM

My girl Vegas went 137 days POS and went into labor about 24 hrs ago. She passed 2 slugs and then seemed to get hung up on another slug. She spent about 5 hrs trying to pass that slug, I sprayed her down a few times and had to get a couple hrs sleep.

When I woke up she had finally gotten what looks like 3 or 4 more slugs out (nesting material is shredded newspaper, so it's hard to tell exactly) as well as one lone very active baby. She still had what looked like 1/3 of the mass to deliver. That was this AM before work. Got home from work and shoot, she looks exactly the same. I posted a pic here. She is very aware, protective and aggitated. I sprayed her down again since that seemed to help last time, but now I don't know what else to do.

Anyone had this happen before?

There is nothing protruding from her vent, she does not appear to be pushing at all. Should I just let her be for a while longer? A day? A couple days? Maybe she's got another slug stuck up in there? Would a luke warm soak help get things moving? That's all I can think of at this time.

Does anyone have ideas or advice? Ever been through this before? It's new to me. I've never had a boa go so long after POS before and I've never had a slug fest before either (but hey! At least there's one baby!).

Thanks for any help you can offer,
-April

IDK April , I'd give the warm water soak a try, I think she needs an ultra sound.
I personally would probably be an extremely worried mess !

I have no experience with a problem like this yet, no fem of mine
has ever had trouble with slugs or delivery of young.

I'd be tempted I should say I would to examine her while she is
soaking to see what I can feel in her.

If there is a slug and there are any babies left in her if their
ruptured they will suffocate.

So I would be worried about that and her healt.

I know I'm no help !

Good luck I hope she moves that mass, couple prayers would not hurt !

Thanks Larry. I am a complete mess over this.. whatever hair I have that was not gray I'm sure has turned gray now!

Boas, love them but they drive me crazy.

I cleaned the cage and found 6 slugs, 2 of which appear to have ruptured (eek... makes me worry about Vegas's health...) and the one little lone baby. At least the baby seems to be doing well, very active and alert, shoot, looks like this little one is ready for a meal!

I would say soak her in a tub with a heat pad under it...my het Leopard recently dropped 3 babies and around 15 pills...when she was in the warm water soaking she spit out another pill...I put a pad under her just in case and nothing...she is now doing good and is back on food. Hope she does well!

Thanks so much Brandon! I've got her soaking now in luke warm water with a heating pad on one side (it's a big sterlite tub). I'm about to go check on her and then off to sleep for a couple hours, I'll check on her every 2 hrs until morning. I'll post an update once I get to work tomorrow.

April,
I am going thru the same thing right now... my last female of the year took 4 hours tuesday to spit out 3 babies 2 slugs and a little turd... I have been misting her daily... took her to vet yesterday for sonogram and xray... she still has babies in her and alive but vet thinks it will just take more time..

I have heard of this before where females have tried to pass some stool and pushed a baby out with it as well, then the restr of the litter comes a day or 2 later... This is my first time having this happen as well so i will keep you posted as to how mine turns out as well...

Hope your does well and keep us posted..

John

Thank you for sharing the experience John! Please keep me updated on what happens with your girl. I'll make sure to post an update here as well. This gives me hope that she just delivered partial early and may still be okay.

Good luck and I hope your girl has babies soon!

Soaked her in a warm tub for about 6hrs and she did pass a small amount of feces. The mass that was swollen and straining at her vent seems to have gone back up where it was before... does that even make sense?

She's back in her clean cage this morning and does not seem to be in distress. I'll hope she just delivered the slugs and 1 baby early... time will tell I guess.

I wonder if I should offer her a small rat or just wait a few more weeks? Her last meal was at 80 days POS.

Feed her! If she eats, she is probably okay. If she won't take it, get her to the vet.

Thx for the Update April, I hope she'll be alright , I would probably
want to get an ultrasound/sonogram.

That could answer some questions for you !
