Boa not constricting normal ?!?

CoNsTrIcToR1 May 25, 2003 10:53 PM

Hello to all. I just purchased my first "Common Boa" last week and so am new to the Boa forum here although have been a member of the Ball Python forum for quite a while now.
While feeding today, I wiggled a thawed rodent in front of my new boa for a couple of minutes, and he displayed no signs of interest. I placed the mouse down in the cardboard box that he was in and turned away for a few seconds. When I looked back, he was starting to swallow the rat head first....without constricting it. I just thought it was very strange. Had that been a live rat and he wouldve tried that, there may have been serious injury (although I dont feed live for that reason). Any thoughts?

Many times snakes will eat f/t prey without constricting it, it is nothing to worry about. If you were to offer a live mouse, I assure you he would constrict as normal. I tried once with a cornsnake that had eaten f/t all it's life and never constricted. I gave it a live rat pinkie and he knew exactly what to do.

I agree with Audri. Out of 9, 7 of mine still go for the kill, the other two on the other hand have caught on, and skip the drama and just sit back to a nice relaxing dinner, lol. Some that have had F/T from early on realize there is no threat and that it is ready as is. Not abnormal IMO.
