Sentinel Morph Question

bcisco Jun 25, 2010 04:30 PM

What the deal with the Sentinel morph? I hear people advertising het for Sentinel, but in the same breath call it co-dom with a visual super form. While recessive, co-com and dominate all have heterozygous and homozygous forms, people don't say something is het for Pastel……you don’t need to, het for Pastel is Pastel and homo for Pastel is Super Pastel. People will say Het for BEL, but that’s because the BEL is the super form…..lesser, butter, vinrusso, mojave are the het form of the BEL.

Am I missing something? If Sentinel is the super form, I could understand saying something is het for Sentinel. But if Sentinel is the het form of a co-dom trait, it would seem that it should just be call Sentinel and drop the het.

It's just like calling a yellowbelly a "het ivory". It's visual (if you know what you're looking at) and has a super form. Chuck calls his Paints and Super Paints, Ben just happens to call his super a Sentinel so his hets are het sentinel.

in my case the super came first from africa and it was named the sentinel ball. Three of them came in captive hatched so we had no doubt that it was genetic. We just thought there would be a super of the super so to speak, but they WERE the super. Therefore the codom offspring are being called het sentinels. I wish I could turn the clock back and call the codoms sentinels and the supers super sentinels but what can you do!

That clears it up for me, thank. Those are some good looking Ball Pythons by the way.

Simply, rename them ... call the Sentinels - super sentinel and the hets - sentinels .... everyone will quickly figure it out.

I did the Het name change with the Cajun/Super Cajun. Nice morph -- your morph. Change that name. Best of with the gene Ben!!!

Agree 100% with you John! Would be better to change the naming to better fit the situation.. I feel the Crystal project is the same way , there should be no such thing as "Special" as that is too confusing . The Special should in fact be called
Crystal and then when you make the crosses you won't have a mess on your hands. I know if I make the Mystic with the Special gene in it this season I am NOT calling that snake a Mystic Special as it sounds silly (especially if it looks alot like the original Crystal) I will call it a Crystal Mystic as that is what it is . The "Crystal" should be called the Crystal Mojave too as that is what it is also.. Aint my project to change all of that but I will say that whatever new combos I make here's going to get named in a simple way that people won't have to rack their brain out to follow ! This isn't a race to see what names are the most confusing and how many can keep up with all of it ... This hobby is about making the most insane looking snake before the next guy can make the same thing and actually knowing how you made it and what the genes involved are doing to each other to create the effect your shooting for !!!!!!!

Did you name them Sentinels? If so...just called the hets Sentinels and the supers...Super Sentinels. People will catch on. Haha.
