caging- opinions needed

luke420 Sep 23, 2003 03:20 PM

Hey! sorry its been so long since my last post, Ive been SUPER busy with school and work. Anyhoo, Im Building a new cage for Luke, but need you opinions on materials. I Was going to use tempered glass for the sides- until I found out how much it costs! The cage will be 8'high x 12'long x 4'deep. I dont want to use plexiglass because it scratches too easily. I need it to be strong, yet transparent. Any thoughts?

Thanks a bunch!
-Stefano

Nah, I'd just use plexiglass. My cage is made from plexiglass, and although it does scratch, it's hard to notice all the little lizard scratches around the bottom from Myka wanting out. It's lighter, cheaper, and much easier to work with than tempered glass. And hey, plexiglass is strong enough for an iguana

Good luck with your new cage! It sounds great!

Also, acrylic (Plexiglass) blocks sound much better than glass, and heat escapes through it much more slowly (than glass).

Consider Lexan. It's similar to acrylic, except it's crystal clear and you simply can't break it. Even with a hammer. You'd need an axe. You can find it in corrugated form (used for patio covers) at large harware stores and lumber yards. One brand name is Suntuff, which you can Google up.

If you can find it in sheet form with very thin thickness (so to speak) let me know. I wish I could get it in 1/32 inch sheets.

First off, what a beautiful photo of your Ig!

I'm in the process of building Tempest a new cage (well, ok, I'm very ill at the moment so my Dad is doing this before Tempest comes into season), and what I've done is gone around looking for storm windows and doors from old houses, in used building materials stores and in news paper ads. I've even got a pair of patio doors from friends of mine that replaced theirs, the glass from them is going to make an amazing front to Tempest's cage! I've found a couple of old farm windows that are in wooden frames, all they need is some sanding and some stain and they'll make great sides, for $15 cdn. Greenhouse places sometimes have sheets of glass too, or ones that are cracked that a big enough piece can be cut out of it to be useful in a cage. Hope this helps, good luck!

Me and Luke just wanted to say thanks for everyone's input. I think I am going to go with the plexiglass. Thanks again!
