Purchasing CA Reptiles from out of state

rkhorne Jun 26, 2010 10:05 PM

I recently heard that it's OK for a CA residence to purchase CA herps from persons or business outside of CA.

Can anyone confirm this, and hopefully point me to a website that explains this?

Thanks,
Roger

Hi,

I have a state permit for my reptiles that allows the purchase of native reptiles found in my state from out of state suppliers. I have purchased eastern box, north american wood, eastern painted and eastern musk turtles from out of state and these animals are listed on my state permit that gets renewed and reviewed every year. All the permit requires is that the buyer, namely you, provide a receipt for the purchase so that it is certain that the animals were not captured from the wild.

I suspect that any state with a permit system will allow the purchase of native reptiles from outside their native range with a valid receipt.

Some states such as New York and Pennsylvania among others do not allow the keeping or breeding of native reptiles which, in my opinion, is blatantly illegal because it interferes with interstate commerce, however, no organization, like PIJAC or ARK has challenged these state laws regarding their legality.

These laws need to be challenged if we are to preserve our rights to keep and breed native or exotic reptiles and amphibians.
