snake repellent?

fliptop Jun 27, 2010 04:11 PM

A friend who raises chickens mentioned something about putting snake repellent around the perimeter of the chicken yard. I think he said they were (or were like) moth balls. Anyone ever hear of this stuff and if so, does it work?

Thanks!

I have heard of all sorts of tricks to repell snakes, like Thick Ropes and even Powdered Sulfur but I haven't seen any that works. This may be a new product and could be they finally found something that works, but I haven't heard of it. Maybe someone else has?

I have heard that garlic juice mixed with water works.....
I assume it would have to be a pretty strong mix, and who knows if its true.

There is nothing he can put out that will keep snakes away without killing his chickens. To me the repellants are a mix of old wives tales and questionable marketing.

Drop off a few local kings to your friend ? Their scent trails may give other snakes the shivers? Educate him that the few things they might gobble up are small consequence in comparison to hopefully the number of other snakes(venomous) and rats and mice that are there looking for feed to eat? Just a thought..

He's by no means anti-snake (he wouldn't be a friend then, would he?). He once lost a biddy to a black rat snake, and he's looking for a way to keep that from happening in the future.

He also told me of a beautiful eastern king he found on his property (he's in GA), sounded like one of the wider-banded ones.

Thanks to all replies!

Yeah, I have heard of many things regarding snake repellent, including the moth ball thing.

Here is a link with a little something regarding this issue. There is a bunch of other stuff too if you google it up.

I love the funny pic here on the link..LOL!

....and it is "proffesional grade" too!..LMAO!

the "cannot attack" thing is funny as hell too!

Nice loud marketing paint-job, I must say. It would "work" even better if it was black though instead of neon banana yellow, but that looks much better for marketing purposes to the general public..LOL!

Of course a black one would fry the snake on a hot sunny day too. Problems - problems, what's a poor ophiophobe to do?

I wonder how much coin that silly thing is?..LMAO!

that trap's funny. i should have had one on hand, and maybe the little king loose in my house would have showed up in it.

but isn't the real way to eliminate snakes in an area to bring a bunch of herpers in to look for them? THAT is when they're never seen, after all.

DMong Jun 28, 2010 05:53 PM

LOL!,......ain't it the truth??

true irony my friend.

And doesn't that snake look a little too comfortable there?. A stuck snake in a sticky trap looks very contorted and uncomfortable from wiggling around trying to get free. But like most commercials we see, it is total BUNK!

I sure hope you find your Eastern one day soon. It will probably happen in the least expected scenario as they usually are.

Years ago, one of my four foot Hondo females scared the TAR out of me by being coiled-up in the huge baggy pocket of a pair of shorts I went to put on one morning.

Needless to say, in a fraction of a second it was SHOCK OVER-LOAD to my brain, and got my adrenalin going better than any cup of coffee could ever do..

HA! That's right! I didn't see a darn snake when I was there, though he mentioned how beautiful the king was he found! I DID however see a couple beautiful eastern box turtles, which really made my day.

Terry I'd say that putting you, Lindsay, and me in the same car might just be one of the best snake repellant techniques, huh?
