Incubation Container

Reptyle Jun 29, 2010 07:49 PM

What do y'all use to hold the eggs while they're in the incubator? I don't need ideas for incubators or the material that the eggs rest on, I need a better idea than what I am using to hold the eggs. I appreciate any help.

I simply use plastic "shoebox" containers. The ones I prefer are the ones with the lid attached to the base. They seem to form a tighter seal when closed and since they simply snap closed I don't disturb the eggs as much when I open them up once a week or so.

The ones with the removable lids always seem to allow too much air into the boxes (they dry out much faster) and when I need to open and remove the lid it seems I tend to end up with the containers that "catch" or get stuck when I'm trying to open them.

The boxes are Sterlites that I pick up at Walmart for roughly $2 a piece.

One other nice thing about having an attached lid: I never have to worry about misplacing the lids during the "off" season. Plus, they are guaranteed to always fit perfectly.

I'm still not sure if it's weird that my best friend is a two year old boa named Ronin. He's quiet, non-judgemental and listens... what more could you want?

I use Sterlite "Show Offs" with a piece of plastic sheeting that fits between the lid and the box. They take up more space than a shoebox, but they leave less room for error in the actual egg "environment".

I use Iris sweater boxes, no holes, with a 1/4 inch pane of glass on top. We use a vermiculite, perlite & water mix. The panes of glass can be purchased at any glass store in whatever size you want. Just be sure to ask for finished/ground edges. The humidity is perfect and at 88-89 degrees, hatchlings emerge at day 56-57.

I'd use the shoe boxes too, but my incubator is too small. The 5 eggs I've hatched so far this year were in Tupperware containers...same setup as that only smaller tubs.

Next season I plan on converting this HUGE thick styrofoam cooler I have into an incubator. That would give me room for 6 of the boxes you use.
