amphibian toxicity

easternnewbie Jun 30, 2010 02:33 PM

Besides possibly ambystomid salamanders, are most common frogs and treefrogs and their larvae ok to feed to eastern hognose? and without sparking too much contraversy, how about occasional or more than occasional mice as long as they are not overfed. I'm not holding anyone to it, just looking for some opinions or experiences. thanks.

Most amphibian produce/secrete toxins in one form or another.

Easterns that I kept as a kid in SE Texas ate gulf coast toads (which have bufotoxin). I have had other snakes that ate Hyla spp. which have toxic skin secretions. Several species of colubrid snake prey on Ranid frogs....... I would think that all of the species you listed as possible prey items would be OK for an eastern hognose.

Just my 2 cents,
Chris
