jeffk Jun 30, 2010 04:47 PM

I just got a ball python from a friend who breeds them like crazy. I brought home and my grandmas lost it, shes soo afraid of snakes. i wanna keep him but i would have to hide hide in my room. my thinking is that i can build a 1 bin rack for under my bed and had a heating pad under the tub. i know there's gotta be someone out there that has had to hide some snakes before please help me out. i want whats best for the snake as far as housing.

Haha, yeah I actually did used to do that when I was a kid and my mother would have one of her "episodes" and tell me to get rid of my snakes or not to buy any more.

I just used an appropriately sized Sterilite and a regular heating pad, placed securely and strategically in my closet. At one point, I had my whole collection in there...like 10 or 12 various Python species. Haha!

Obviously not your ideal keeping scenario, but if you're anything at all like me, you're gonna do it anyway. So rest assured that it CAN be done. Just be careful with your heat source. Don't set anything on fire! ie: Don't place a heating pad directly on carpet with the snake's box on top of it. Use a piece of plywood or something else underneath it. Also make sure the lid is secure, obviously (duct tape). And don't let anyone in your closet. If you don't do your own laundry already, now's the perfect time to learn.

Good luck.

Why build anything?
41 quart latching sweater box with a heating pad. It'll slip right under a bed.

I didn't tell you this. This message will self destruct in 10...9...8...

Ok... Sorry I have to be the adult here.
This is a very bad idea. Eventually it will be found, You will be in BIG trouble and you will have to find your ball python another home.

I know how you feel, I loved snakes as a kid, and which according to my mother "snakes are not something "normal girls' like". In fact my mom now blames herself for my Snake (& reptile) obsession because she deprived e as a child. But now I have my own house and she can't do anything about it. Nanana-NAH Mom!

Ophidiophobia ( fear of snakes) is not something that can easily gotten over. Most people who are afraid of snakes are REALLY afraid of snakes. You really need to respect your grandmothers fear.

Do you have a friend who is into ball Pythons too, who's parents don't mind the cold blooded pets? Maybe you could keep yours at his/ her house. Snake friends are the best!
