Final litter for 2010

Miloradovich Jul 01, 2010 10:30 AM

And it's another great sized one! 25 babies discovered in Mom's cage during this morning's walk through of the snake room. Got her cleaned up and the babies into a seperate container, then had to rush off to work but here are some quickly taken pics.

And since I am here some more O/T pics.
This is a small super salmontine litter with some babies that I think oughta mature into some great looking animals.

All in all it's been a pretty good season for me so far. I unfortunately lost one pregnant female BCI who was full of over 30 slugs but have had a couple of good boas litters to make up for it. I went 3 for 3 with my Rainbows so I couldn't have asked for a better outcome there, especially with such high numbers from 2 of them. I currently have 20 python eggs incubating and looking good, and my rosy boas have been breeding and I've gotten a few ovulations from the girls so far.
I've gotta say despite the occasional setbacks and frustrations, this is one greatly enjoyable and rewarding hobby to be involved in. Hope everyone else is having as much fun as I am so far this season and good luck to everyone who'se got females expecting!
Thanks for looking.

Zack, thanks for the compliments on the new babies.
The loss of the one female was a real heartbreaker for me. She was a really pretty 2004 hypo harlequin that I had raised from a baby. I think she basically got egg bound from the quantity and size of the slugs. When I came home to find her deceased it was evident that she'd been trying the pass the slugs as a couple were in the back of the cage. I preformed some post mortem surgery in case there were any live babies. Not a good experience and quite a let down as you can imagine.

I know exacly how it feels, I lost an 04 suriname RTB earlier this year, had her as a neonate, it just breaks your heart to lose a pet you love so much.

Jason,
...No fun losing a snake and also no fun cutting into them to see what might have happened. I always open bad eggs and dead gravid females trying to learn something from my failures. Nearly all of my losses the last decade have been related to reproduction. I think if we did not breed them we could keep them alive and healthy for a very long time. If you really get into the breeding this is a great lifelong hobby. I had my first litter in 1964 and still get excited with new babies.

Thanks Dave!
Yeah loosing her was a bummer but you're right it does sometimes happen especially during breeding season. I am fortunate that her loss was followed by some positive litters. Help to take the sting out a little.

Hey Milo,

BIG congratulations on the two recent HUGE litters you've had! I am still doing the anxious, nervous, pacing back and forth checking on daily game waiting for my girl to drop. She is 110 days POS as of today! I was just had a few questions for you as you obviously have your BRB breeding protocol perfected.

Can you give me some basic outline/timeline of your cooling method and male/female introductions?

Also, for how long do you leave the male and female together?

Lastly, what temp hotspot do you provide to your gravid females, and do you offer them food while they're prego?

Thanks and I look forward to hearing what methods are working for you! I also included a pic of my gravid girl Roxxy from way back when for good measure.
