Peaks on BCI?

BoaGal Jul 01, 2010 06:35 PM

My albino litter from 4/30 had babies with some peaked saddles. Not all had peaks, a lot had normal bow-tie patterns. Do peaks only occur in BCCs, or can BCIs have them too? Someone I sold some babies to thought they had BCC influence because of the peaks.

Here are some babies with little peaks, let me know what you think and thanks for the input!!

BCC's from the Guyana Shield are known for their "peaks", but there are also animals from this area that have no peaks.

Peruvian BCC's are known for their "pinched saddles", but there are also animals from this area that have peaks.

Peaks can occur in BCI's as well. But, how certain are you that your "Colombians" are BCI? BCC exist in Colombia. As do natural inter-grades.

Peru is right next door to Colombia, btw.

The best bet is, if you don't know the lineage of the animal with certainty, don't assume. It's a pet trade albino boa. And there's nothing wrong with that

We have a nice project going on working with BCI that have "peaks" in our Caramel Albino project. I really believe it is a genetic based deal-looks to be dominant-and animals with peaks make animals with peaks in the next generation. Here is a pic of one of my favorite females with some pretty nice widows peaks. She descended from what I call my "widows peak" male-he just seemed to pop up and it has gotten better from there!

but it makes one wonder what kind of influences are in out true columbians i dont think much bout the pet trade animals if i like whats going on with it i buy it lol look at some of the new designer morphs mainly the tails it makes you wonder how much of bcc and bci is in there example i had to ask a breeder if a certain morph had has bcc influence due to the deep burgundy in the tail which this breeder assured me it wasnt the case

i think there is alot of morphs out there we wouldnt have if there wasnt some other locality influence hypo hogs sunsets etc being an example but does this take away from the beauty of the snake i think not shoot i seen a sharp male at a show that i swore up and down by the markers it was part suri and low and behold it wasnt in fact the male if 4years old now and hasnt gotten over four feet

i think alot of lines have been crossed on the bcc to bci breeding over the years but look at some of the animals it produced i wouldnt kick them out any of my tubs lol

but ive been wrong in the past the last morph that tripped my trigger was a crossing between central american and a hog island and i cant wait for the breeding to take place again so i can get a baby out of it lol hint hint if your reading this another was a blood dwarf to a sharp snow

so with that said im not to sure bout the purity in the trade all i know is some of the morphs coming out are awe inspiring
and i cant wait for shows to see whats new regardless of local
but it does make you look at your animals a little closer and wonder if you bought what you set out to buy lol

That makes me wonder too. How many "true" columbians are there? Or any other locale for that matter? Other locales may be more pure, since the common red-tail is, well, common lol. But I agree with you, they are all gorgeous! And, again, I'm happy with my "pet trade" boas.

I'm perfectly fine with my pet trade boas. It would be interesting, however, to trace the lineage and find out exactly what's mixed in, if anything. Thanks for the info!

well i guess it wouldnt really matter to me its the beauty of the animal if its in my house its a family member Quality snakes are produced every day id rather buy one that has been mixed up then by one that has been line bred to the extent of it being its own great grandpa lol

Agreed. I've bred two very typical colombians and gotten a few babies with some peaks (usually only on the first couple saddles behind the head). I've bred albino and het directly from PK and gotten 1 or 2 babies in the litter with peaks.

Boas are just variable.

A boa like the albino originally pictured with all those peaks would make me suspisious but doesn't mean it's still not a Colombian. I tend to hold back and keep the unpeaked babies.
