IKEA sells snake RACKS......??

chongorojo Jul 02, 2010 03:21 AM

Girl and I went to IKEA today and I found these racks for around $75 bucks.. They are pretty neat for 600 gram yearlings. tubs Measure around 15wx20dx10t and the lids seem tight enough to me that I wont have to make keeper straps. If you end up there check em out.. let me know what you think. The dog bowl is about 8 inches and was $0.49 and is recessed underneath for a cool hid/water bowl combo. If you do green tree pythons there is a big tub that looks like to me would make a good hatchling arborial tub. same rack just holds 3 tubs instead of 6... They have unprinted news print at check out for glass cups and such but the cashier gave me a big stack of them when I said how much I wish they sold it for tub liners..

Do you have an item number by chance so I can look it up on their site? The closest Ikea to me is like 2 hours away and I'm not driving down there just to find out they don't have it. Haha.

I took 11" heat tape right down the middle of the 2 racks... tape it to 3/4" melamine just wide enough for the heat tape. Put on the ol johnson and helix and VIOLA 12 tub juvie/corn snake rack for under $250 bucks! I must admit I was thinking (well girlfriend was telling me any how) that those racks would make good rat breeder and grow out bins.. she is too quick for me.. lol

WAY to much heat would build up in those if you were to put rats in them, rodents are warm blooded remember, unlike snakes. Either that or they would find a way to chew right out of them. They may work for larger sized snakes but I'm about 99% sure you would have horrible luck trying to put rats or mice in them.. Cool idea I do admit BUT not for rodents!!!

Anthony,
these tubs work perfectly fine....i even have been breeding ASF rats in them.....if they can survive them......they can survive any rodent.

when you want for bigger BP´s, you can use these:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S19807168

This is the only "rack-boxes" that I use.
The big for big males & females and the smallest for BP´s up to 800-1000grams...

I got the Pax system also from IKEA.
Wardrobe without doors. Buy loose shelfs and then you got it =)

They look like they wouldnt be to bad but would probably be best if you had them in a reptile room that stays at the right temp...

Pitoon Jul 02, 2010 03:18 PM

they are just like any other metal "open air" rack, you need to have the ambient temperature right.

a 6 slot rack for 75 bucks? that awesome dose it come with tubes and how did you heat it? also, did you get the water bowls there to? and a part number would be great
Nate

Dave79 Jul 03, 2010 01:15 AM

Cool, do you have a part number? Or maybe what its called. Thanks.

chongorojo Jul 03, 2010 05:20 AM

These "racks" include The tubs, lids and melamine "toppers" all for UNDER 75 bucks! I do keep mine in a reptile room that is warm enough ambient wise but like I said running 11" heat tape down the back of the 2 racks in the middle so both can share gives pretty decent hot spots in the inside rear corners..... yes the water bowls came from ikea 49 cents for the smaller ones and 99 cents for the BIG ones.. the cashier really thought I had hundreds of dogs lol...

Hmph...Canada Ikea doesn't seem to have the plastic drawers...just cloth ones...or at least that is as far as I can tell on the website. Though one picture looks like it has plastic shelves...I will have to go pay a visit to the local Ikea store...I certainly could use a decent rack system that doesn't weigh a ton nor cost hundreds of dollars.

When I get home this evening. The mobility of these is what drew me to them! I didn't spring for the casters (like 10 bucks) yet as I wanted to see how they would work first... I'm loving them and could easily push them around the snake room if I had bought the casters... oh well, guess I will have to go back again and get a few more heck at least one more for holding live feeders so I don't have to run back and forth from the rat room to the snake room to feed.
