help with monitor substrate.

trompo0 Jul 02, 2010 01:35 PM

Hello guys thanks for your help last time my Savannah is eating like a champ now. Anyways on with my next question. Recently I noticed that my Savannahs substrate has a lot of little white bugs in it. At first I thought they were mights but mights are black. They are not on my monitor they are just in the substrate. Btw my substrate is coco earth and I keep at 65% humidity. His basking is now at 127F and cool side is 80F. He eats good and behaves good nothing weird. Are those white little bugs somthing I gotta worry about? Please help. Thank you

Its hard to say without knowing what kind of bugs they are. I would definitely clean out the cage good. Better safe than sorry.

The bugs you're describing are probably springtails, they are a group of tiny wingless insects that eat decaying matter (dead leaves, poop, etc.). They're harmless, in fact most dart frog keepers deliberately introduce them to their terrariums to help break down dead leaves/frog poo and for the frogs to eat. You can replace the substrate if you wish, but there's no real reason to, and they'll probably come back so it would be a wasted effort.
