mice, rats or both?

peteralbrian Sep 23, 2003 06:14 PM

my baby ball tsudaka ( male) is a pig... he is always hungry and would eat dayly if it had been up to him... i feed him weekly.. today he took a hopper and a rat pinkie.... he doesn't seem to mind the smell...

is it ok to feed him both, not an the smae feeding... maybe a hopper one week and a rat pup the next. i breed my own rats and mice so i don't care whats most worthed.. however i have very small colonies and don't always have the excat size i want..

can anyone forcast any problems ??? or should i just stick to one of them? his parents used to eat mice, rats, guinea pigs and even a small dwarf rabbit i think...

I have snakes that eat both and there are no apparent problems. I prefer rats to mice for reasons of ease - it is easier to feed two med-large rats than 10 mice.

My hatchlings have eaten rat pups and adult mice with no problems. I think you are safe either way.

I prefer rats myself, and the main reason for that is the animals grow much faster at least in my experiences. Another reason I try to get everything on rats is, if they ever do go off of feed for what reason and they decide they don't want to take a rat right away I can always toss a mouse in there and they will take that faster. I have noticed greater feeding responses from mice ( for picky eaters ) then rats. My thoughts are what if a mouse feeder goes off of feed and wont take a mouse ? then what ? gerbil? Well just my thoughts on the old rats vs. mice story.
