Gargoyle420 Sep 23, 2003 06:30 PM

Hi all,
I have a dilema on my hands.8 years ago i had to get rid of my entire collection of reptiles because my wife got pregnant and i was worried about my newborn getting salmonella.Well i just found out the stork is on the way again.Does anyone know how this happens?hehehe I just got restarted 5 years ago and i hope there is a way for a newborn and a reptile collection to co-exist.Im very anal about not transfering germs around when i clean cages and do water bowls.Everything i touch is sprayed with bleach when im done.Im just wondering if anyone else has some input for me i would appreciate it.Sorry about slammin some people in the post below that was wrong.Im just stressed out..Paul..

Seeing as how every other picture he posts he has his snakes licking his kids faces... lol

I would replace all of my hand soap dispensers with antibiotic handsoaps, buy a huge bottle of antibiotic hand gel (no water hand clenser) and don't like the snakes crawl in the carrot mush and you'll be ok.

If you handle the snakes or frozen mice, pinkies, just wash you hands. Keep the little guy or girl away.

I thought someone mentioned once you can get your animals tested for sal by testing poo but I don't know how accurate they say that is.

Those are my thoughts... anyone?

LOL, well you have to know I did get rid of my big snakes before Jesse was born. I never worried about Salmonella. We have 4 dogs and 4 cats walking around Jesse all day. Why worry about salmonella from the snakes then? We just wash our hands all the time before we eat.

I think as long as you're cleaning up well after handling and generally being sanitary it shouldn't be a problem. Like they say, you're much more likely to get salmonella from chicken. Oh, and don't feed birds to your snakes - I hear that's an easy way for the snake to get salmonella.

I have a 3 month old and I have no quams or worries about my cleaning practices. I am completely confident in myself and my ability to care for my family, be they human or not. My hubby isn't so sure, but I am!

Congrats on your newcomer and good luck!

What about airborne pathogens? That is what really worries me.

Is there something in particular you're worried about? Off the top of my head, I can't think of any airborne illnesses that could be transmitted from the snake - but I'm far from an expert.

According to the CDC, salmonella is the only zoonose you have to worry about getting from reptiles. And it's not an airborne disease (thank goodness). Snakes are unlikely to transmit salmonella in the first place, although it's possible. So I think your wife should start licking turtles now to get her resistance up... (ok, just kidding)

TOADS!

I think that would present an entirely different set of issues. The baby might end up thinking it was a lobster for its whole life.
