urban herpin'

varanid Jul 03, 2010 10:05 PM

I know it's a bit different, but in lots of the US, there's tons of urban herps. I've seen a variety of herps in cities--parks, backyards, parking lots, etc.

This fellow was found in the parking lot of a retail store I used to work at

wife's coworkers apartment

city park

In addition I've found prairie rattlers (in the same park as that Nerodia),a bull snake (IN the retail store I used to work at), a buttermilk racer (mom's yard in Houston), a texas rat (same), thamnophis, etc. in urban environments. I know it's not the normal "field" work, but I was wondering what ya'll had come across inside cities, photos very welcome :D

Cool post

I've seen quite a bit of herps within city limits. I've found tiger salamanders in empty lots, yards, & a bar parking lot, & there are small pockets of plains garters in various long time nieghborhoods arround the city. The parks arround here that have ponds or river running through them have plains, wandering, & red sided garters. The coolest herp I've seen in the city limits was a HUGE painted turtle in the grass at a hospitol about 3/4 of a mile from the nearest body of water. & a couple years ago my wife found a 5 ft bullsnake in the parking lot of the college she was going to.
