Caging questions

tracehardin Jul 05, 2010 03:39 PM

I keep all my adult rainbow boas in 4' x 2' cages. It seems to be an awful lot of room for snakes that stay curled up most of the time. Have you guys ever experimented putting two females in the same cage? What size cages or racks do you keep your adults in? Thanks!

I've seen people keep adult Brazilian Rainbow Boas in cages as small as 2'x 2', but a little extra space isn't a bad thing. Even if they spend most of the time curled up, some extra room to cruise around is always nice. If you decide to keep 2 females in the same cage, just make sure they each have their own hide.

Hey there,I built my rack in order to house full grown BRBs. I made it using the Iris VE-175 tubs and melamine. It's now been three years since I built this and I'm really liking it still.

The tubs are sold at Walmart during the Christmas season, and they have dimensions of 4.4ft L x 1.75ft W x 14" H so I would imagine they are probable pretty close in size with your 4x2 cages. I have no experience with using smaller sized cages for adults so I can't comment on that.

I have noted that they definitely use every inch of space in their tubs though nearly 99% of that activity happens between the hours of 1 a.m. - 6 a.m. so I rarely see them out and about. I also use these tubs for breeding and I find it nice to have a large enough cage for both adult brbs to have enough room. Anyway, sorry for rambling, I'm sure someone here has some experience housing them in smaller enclosures successfully, I'll let them talk

Trace,
....I keep my adult female BRBs in 36 inch Vision cages with one inverted clay flower pot in each cage. Two females to a cage and I watch the snakes and let them tell me if they are incompatible and need either seperate hides or a new room mate. During breeding season I add one male to each cage and it does seem a little crowded but the snakes do well and do not complain.

Hey Trace,

I keep my breeder adult females in 2' x 2' x 19" wood cages I made. For breeding I open a pass-through between two and add in a male for a 1.2 breeding group. They are doing just fine in that size but I do get a little bit of a vertical climb for them since the water bowl is on top of the hide.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think I'll keep my females in doubles and keep the males in 41qt sterlite tubs when they're not breeding.
