Breeding size for Black Milks?

Jeff Clark May 25, 2003 11:54 PM

. My Black Milks are around 40 inches at 22 months of age. I am thinking they will probably not be big enough to breed next year. Perhaps the following year? Anyone know what is a good size to first breed them?
Thanks,
Jeff

I got my blacks from Guy Clark (www.kingsnake.com/whri). In an old email, he told me that black females should be at least 4' in length and of good body weight. Typically this would make them at least 30 months old.

Every gaigeae breeder I've talked to has recommended waiting till these guys are 3 years old before breeding them. Breeding at a younger age will increase the risks of low fertility and egg binding. They have pretty large eggs. 48" would be the minimum size that I would consider breeding them. My breeders are CB97 and are a little over 5'.
Good luck,
Chris
