i'm trying to design an inexpensive cabinet display for my two snakes and can't keep the price under $500. i'd appreciate any suggestions you guys have.

Yes
It's only the oils within pine that are actually harmful to the respiratory fact. Meaning dimensional lumber and plywood that is Pine is actually safe for the most part. The biggest issue with Pine is actually Pine shaving, reason being Pine Shavings are not kiln dryed like lumber.
That being said Pine ply and Dimensional lumber are best for what they were designed, building homes.
When using wood for caging materials, furniture grade is a safer bet. Baltic Birch Ply, Aspen or Birch dimensional wood are typically less prone to warping unlike the Softer white/yellow Pine.
