Alamagordo NM herping?

varanid Jul 06, 2010 07:10 PM

I'm going to be going to Alamogordo NM for family reasons, and I'm going to be needing to get out in the field to burn off stress (hey, rattlesnakes vs family...I understand snakes). Are there any good parks other than White Sands where I stand a decent shot of seeing herps? Amphibs, lizards, snakes, whatever. I'll probably only have 1-2 days; it'll probably be in August (unoffical memorial for a cousin that died in May; we're hoping her parents come around by then and quit acting like it didn't happen).

Road cruising any of the roads around there should produce snakes. Down in the Tularosa basin itself you could roadhunt in the mornings or at night and get stuff, particularly if they get some rain. In fact, if you find a quiet road and roadhunt, I suspect you would have a hard time failing to find something.

You could go up to Cloudcroft area and look for the endemic Sacramento Mountains Salamander. That's cooler than some Rattlesnake on the desert floor.
