Season.

I find that Bauri and Major fertily is through the roof relative to other boxies. I just palpated my female breeder and she is gravid for the 3rd time this season. I'm hoping for at least one egg, maybe more in the next few weeks!

Let us know how it goes.

I just checked on the eggs, and they are nice white and firm, which leads me to believe they are viable. While checking, I check a container of earlier eggs, and three little Gulf Coast babies were peaking out - I should have took a picture - maybe tomarrow.

Anyways, this is the second clutch for this female - I had a problems with the hovebator sensor sticking, and lost a whole lot of eggs a couple of months ago. For box turtls I am going back to my old way of incubating, a plastic shoe box or container in a dark warm closet.

Hows the woods doing?

Instead of tossing the hovabator, you could make it into a redundant system. Get a reptile thermostat, put the sensor inside the deli cup with the eggs, and run it that way. If you got your hovabator set to the right temperature beforehand, and now you hook it inline with a thermostat, it will be double safetied against overheating. Thermostats cost about 30 bucks, but you can often find them on special at the reptile shops online.

tortugas Sep 25, 2003 11:13 AM

I was extreemly disappointed, as before it stuck, I had six babies hatch - one three toed and 5 gulf coast. Then it stuck, and caused a Flavomarginata to hatch premiturly, and which did not make it - the cutest little guy - very sad, as well as all of the other eggs.

Thanks for the suggestion.

The woods do very well. I just keep 3, a very large CB pair at 14 and 16 years old and of course 5 year old Anouk. This is a recent photo I took of Anouks shell. She's pushing 400 grams now and creeping ever so close to 6 inches. She's also eating voraciously, which I am very happy about.

I'll try to take some pics of the big pair this weekend. Please share a fresh pic of Amulius when you have a chance. Last I saw, he was looking very good.

Cheers Bill.

wow paul, still almost a yellow wood turtle. really awesome!

You'll be pleased to know that "tabitha", as we call your young female, is doing great with the others and eats all sorts of veggies...unlike her spoiled pen mates...pics of their pen soon.

Good to hear! I'm embarassed to admit that I never knew bloomindaedalus was you! Was good to meet you and your wife in Carson. Tabitha is a cutie. Bet she'll be a reddish orange girlie.

Paul

bloomindaedalus Sep 25, 2003 11:47 PM

well i guess that's one more bit of mystique etched away...(everytime somebody find out about a name do you wonnder what stupid things you might have said once?....anyway....)
yeah i think she will be a pretty girl (tabitha, that is, not rachel, who is NOT actually my wife)
i am getting closer to deciding about a piece of land so hopefully the other woodies will join her soon.
house hunting going well for you?

rattay Sep 26, 2003 10:29 AM

My bad. I often make this assumption. Guess it's our age bracket. Everyone seems to be getting married or having kids.

The house hunt is over, thankfully. I email you directly since most people are probably not interested in my house.

With the land you can get in your region, you will have plenty of room for turtle expansion. Which is just what you need, right?

tortugas Sep 25, 2003 11:21 PM

do you have a copy of the Reptiles Magazine with the artical on woods? Yours should be encluded.

I will have to take some pics of mine - one male two females. Of course I will have to clean them up, they are constantly in the mud.

That animal is fantastic. I've seen exactly three with extreme coloration like that. The coolest contrast I've seen is a subadult posted on the Herpcenter website. This is that animal. Waay cool!

nathana Sep 26, 2003 12:59 PM

Holy cow!

I would pay good money for a wood like that. Especially a male. Stunning! A turtle that pretty with the personality of a wood would (ha... get it, wood would "wood wood" be amazing.

rattay Sep 26, 2003 01:15 PM

Yes, I had the same reaction when I first saw that picture. I examined it closely to see if it had been touched up but now that I've seen 2 others with similar coloration up-close, I believe. It's definitely not common, as in the wild these guys would get gobbled. Woods are dark on top (shell, head, limbs) naturally so that they cannot be seen swimming.

Very nice looking wood turtle. Can I get a face shot of the animal?
(definately fed Mazuri)

Thanks. Not the best but this was taken during the same 'photo shoot'.

Paul what are you feeding him, steriods?

Bill

rattay Sep 26, 2003 12:29 PM

I used to have trouble feeding her. I went forward with a dose of Flagyl and voila, she began eating voraciously. Last December she weighed 281 and today she is 400 grams. Thankfully she shows normal shell growth. She lives with the Easterns as I don't want her near the big male until she's 7". So she eats what my boxies eat, which is a blend of fruits, some veggies (but not much), worms, crickets, snails, slugs, some roots (like carrot and sweet potato) and sometimes (yes Ed) Mazuri. A few of them have taken a liking to it.

This is the big male. The male is 9" and weighs in at 1500 grams. He's kind of scary in turtle terms. I caught him trying to mate with the big female. All four of his limbs were grasping her marginals and he was madly hopping up and down (body slamming her). He can achieve 1" of airtime using this method. Thankfully she is big too, 8", and deals with him well. She has even managed to keep her tail.

Looks like my big guy. I am going to start feeding my woods, pinki mice, once a week, as I what they are eating now has more vegitable/fruit content then anything else. What type of Mazuri are you feeding them?

Bill

rattay Sep 26, 2003 06:11 PM

I buy the large 25lbs bag for the cherryheads so I also supplement the boxies with it. It's (mazuri) all somewhat similar and since I feed my boxies and cherryheads nearly the identical diet except with different ratios of protein, veggies & fruits, I figured it couldn't hurt.

Thats my science for the day All in all, they get fed pretty good. Some folks say better than me...

iwasiambev1 Oct 03, 2003 04:10 PM

sorry to bother you but what is "mazuri"?
Bev

StephF Oct 03, 2003 08:37 PM

Its a brand name... makers of pet foods for exotics.

iwasiambev1 Oct 03, 2003 11:05 PM

thank you so much for responding
I have several box turles and never
heard of it, I'll be watching for it now

StephF Oct 04, 2003 08:58 AM

Two posters here have mentioned using it and having success. Sounds like something good to have around to add to the menu...

EJ Sep 27, 2003 12:24 AM

I've read that these guys can be brutal in mating and drowning the female is not uncommon.
Ed

tortugas Sep 27, 2003 12:52 PM

They sure can, I have a buddy that lost a couple of females that way. He had the woods in a large area with a pool like pond, lots of water turtles, and the sides were too steep for the female to walk out of, and they drowned - he obviously moved them to their own enclusure, with a shallow concrete pond.

EJ Sep 27, 2003 01:50 PM

once I get my Turtle/Tortoise ranch up and running (in my wildest dreams) The Wood Turtle along with Spotteds are going to be my first water type turtles. I just love the things as far as personality. If the Woods didn't get so big I might even have some now. I'm right on the edge of picking up some baby spotteds in the hopes that they will be big enough to breed when the Ranch is realized (which is actually a more realistic chance).
Ed

tortugas Sep 27, 2003 03:44 PM

pretty reasonable - although prices are going up all over - especially along the two nort-bound corridors.

EJ Sep 27, 2003 03:53 PM

I'm thinking Jamul, Ramona, backside of El Cajon... that kind of thing.
Ed

rattay Sep 27, 2003 04:49 PM

CB Woods seem to be abundant this year. I have not known so many in the past. They've been nearly as available as boxie babies.

I hope to begin producing next year. We'll see if the pair cooperates. My spidey sense says yes.

Paul

tortugas Sep 27, 2003 05:01 PM

Do your woods have a chance to hibernate?

Oh yeah I need to take some pics.

Be back later.

Beers!!!

Bill

rattay Sep 27, 2003 09:14 PM

They were hibernated last season but came to me in early summer, so the female may have laid eggs early. I will be hibernating them this season as well.

Paul

bloomindaedalus Sep 28, 2003 08:20 PM

yeah everyone says this but i kept them for years before i heard that there is risk of drowning during mating....had lots of eggs and never a drowned turtle but then i didn't witness many of the mating events. Some people who have lots of clemmys keep their genders seperated permenantely except fo planned mating visits. (i guess other folks do this with other species as well but it never appealed to me)

bloomindaedalus Sep 26, 2003 02:42 PM

i still think she (Anouk) is prettier than the other yellow ones posted here...but they are unusual.

rattay Sep 26, 2003 07:09 PM

Thanks Rob. She's my girl. I don't think I've seen the yellow specimens on the forums however.

Paul

EJ Sep 27, 2003 12:22 AM

Beautiful.
