Farewell Bianca

stefaran Sep 23, 2003 08:08 PM

Well my little sick gecko died today.
I guess she just had too many worms and couldn't handle the treatment. I'm calling the vet tomorrow to find out more about the kind of worms since her symptoms appeared abruptly.

Here is a pic of my sweet Bianca

It seemed like you had it figured out what was wrong with her. I havn't heard of them dieing so quickly from worms, that is really sad. She looked very healty too. What medication did they have you giving her?

stefaran Sep 23, 2003 09:58 PM

The vet gave me Ivermectin to give to my geckos.
The others are doing great at the moment.
It's so strange, it all came on so quick...she wasn't feeling good Sunday and she died today.

He said she would probably seem more out of it after treatment..which she did, but I don't know how much was the medicine. The other eight I also treated and they all are doing great! I hope they continue to do good.

treating the others with the ivermecin. Read Robin's post it pretty much expains why. I think you need a second opinion, and if the others need to be treated they should be given something less harmfull like the pancur. Robin gave you some really good links, check them out.

i am sorry for your loss but this medication in reptiles can be very deadly . only reptiles specific vets should adminster this
commonly called ivomec as an injectable form this is a treatment originally for large livestock and can be easily overdosed in anything smaller. it can be lethal in reptiles if not used correctly. the most common parasite medications for reptiles are flagyl and panacure, generally invormec is used as the last option.

http://www.abvt.org/iverm.html

"In the mid-1980's, ivermectin was introduced as probably the most broad-spectrum anti-parasite medication ever. It is effective against most common intestinal worms (except tapeworms), most mites, and some lice. It is not effective against fleas, ticks, flies, or flukes. It is effective against larval heartworms (the "microfilariae" that circulate in the blood) but not against adult heartworms (that live in the heart and pulmonary
arteries).

The most common uses in small animal practice for ivermectin would include:

Monthly prevention of heartworm infection
Treatment of ear mite situations
Clearing heartworm larvae in active heartworm infection
Treatment of sarcoptic, notoedric or demodectic mange
It should be noted that doses of ivermectin used for prevention and treatment of heartworm disease are approximately 50 times lower than doses used for other parasites."

look here for parasite info for reptiles as well as info about ivermec usage in reptiles
http://www.anapsid.org/resources/rxdose.html
maybe these links can help you find out a bit more of why maybe she died or at least more info on the drug given to her
again i am sory for your loss

Thank you so much for this websites!

My dosage was 2.5 times the amount recommended on kaplan's page, and there was a note saying this was being administerd at a near lethal dose. My other geckos are great, but they were healthy to begin with. Poor bianca was in rough shape before the medicine. I don't think her sick body could handle it.

Thank you again. I have learned a lot, but I wish I could have learned another way.

Ivermectin is nasty stuff. I've used it on mammals, birds, and herps. Debilitated Mammals seem to tolerate it fairly well if supportive care is acommpanied with the treatment, e.g. subcutaneous fluids, b-complex injections, thermal regulation.
Birds I use as only a last resort for nasty coccidea infections and capillaria resistant to flagyl.
You should deffinately do research on the meds commonly used for herp medicine. Enrofloxacin(Baytril), Amikacin, Fenbendazole(Panacur),and Metronidazole(Flagyl) are the four biggies used in herp medicine. They are oldies but goodies sos to speek. The two former are antibiotics, the later are anti-parasitic. Flagyl is also a mild broad-spectrum antibiotic.
The Veterinary Drug Handbook auth. Donald C. Plumb is a great book to have. Published by Iowa State University Press/Ames. It runs around $30 and is deffinately a must for the herp keeper's library.
Sorry to hear that your gecko died. No matter how many times we go through it, it never gets easier to lose an animal.
