Large Sulcata and Racoons...... Need some advice

Andy799 Sep 23, 2003 08:42 PM

I usually deal in all smaller turtles/tortoise, and make all there pens with tops, because i have racoon problems here, well i finally got my outdoor cage built and done for a large sulcata and i get him on friday, he is 40 lbs, i'll post some pics when i get him, anyways the new outdoor cage is really big and don't have a top, will racoons bother a 40 lbs sulcata? I really don't think they will, i see a few posts down Ed you thought a 9" yellow-foot would be ok, just wanted to make sure, the racoons are really bad here in ohio, they will try to dig under my pens to get inside, never had a problem yet, just let me know what you guys think

Do you have a place to lock him up safely at night. (like a doghouse in the enclosure with a door on it?) If he has access to this and goes in at night all you would have to do is shut the door and lock it and he would be safe until the morning.

I have an open pen for my redfoots and my yellowfoot and I just take them them indoors at night. Raccoons are generally only a problem after sunset. Hauling a 40 pounder in at dusk might be a little more problematic.

I don't know that a raccoon could inflict a great amount of damage but I wouldn't say that I would trust them not to try.
They are amazing little animals in that they are resourseful and opportunistic and will take any chance they can to get a meal. Just would be worried that you would wake up in the morning and find some chew marks on your torts shell or worse yet legs.
