Identifying Opals

kavo Jul 07, 2010 09:44 PM

I know pics would help you guys out here, but are there any easy identifying features to look for with opals. I bred a pair of amels het bloodred and lavender and got 14 eggs. I was able to identify 3 fires with there lighter faces and patternless bellies, but the other 11 babies look very similar, all peachy pink. I doubt I produced 11 opals and I hope I didn't produce zero. Some are slightly lighter than the others. Maybe it will be easier to tell after their shed. Anyway, if you have any suggestions or maybe a website with good pics that I could hit I would appreciate any help.

Waiting until they shed will give you a FAR better handle on what is going on.

Here is a link to several Opals to check out.

I checked the link, thanks. A lot of them look like the hatchlings pictured. Only 2 or 3 have any red at all, so maybe I just got really lucky with the odds. I was expecting 3 or 4 not 8 or 9.

LOL!,...yeah, projected outcomes are simply theoretical, what ACTUALLY happens can be altogether totally different. It happens quite often..

....odds can be very bad at times and very good sometimes...

opals are pink....but the bloodred in there might make some amels really light?...like said...wait till they shed out then look again....if needed post a pic....

to make it worse I get a few odd opals all the time....light, no color at all (they turned all yellow in 2 years?), really light pinks ,really dark pinks....

good luck...!
