gray rat snakes

crocacutus Jul 08, 2010 10:13 AM

Hi, I'm going to a rept. show in a month and I am not sure what snake to get. One of the breeders there is going to be selling white oak phase gray rats, and I wanted to ask about their care. I haven't been able to find all that much on Google except that they are arboreal and are rodent-eaters, just like other rats.

Also, how is their temperament? I already own an e. king that strikes all the time, so I can deal with it if a snake doesn't want to be held all the time, but I would like one that would tolerate some handling. I have read that some other rats like black rats can be quite difficult to manage

Their care is exactly like other NA rats or corns. Nothing fancy. Dry cage with warm spot, medium water bowl, feed appropriate sized rats and mice. They will use vertical height in the cage if you want to provide it, but just like other NA rats, not necessary.

The CB greys should be pretty mellow. I have captured large adults that were not too bad and only a bit defensive. I think they are more mellow than texas rats. All NA rats appear to be more defensive than say corns IMO, but should mellow with appropriate handling. Some have texas rats, yellow rats, grey rats that are probably as calm and trusting as any corn snake or cal king.

For the price and ease of keeping, all in all a good choice. Plus, they get pretty large and impressive as adults!!
