Moving Across Canada With Rainbow Boa

rainbowsrule Jul 08, 2010 12:44 PM

I am moving from Nova Scotia to Alberta. It is going to be a car trip lasting 7 to 10 days. I have had some opinions on this subject and had decided on using an insulated container, but I have a few questions.
1. Should I put holes in the container, or just open the lid periodically?
2.Should I put him in a bag or other container in the box?(he's about 4 foot and almost 2 years old)
3.His last meal will be next week as I am leaving the 1st of August, is this okay?
4.I am bringing him inside while we are not driving so that he does not overheat, but the air temps so far this year are over 30 degrees celcius, so should I use a cold pack too?

Sorry for the long post and thank you to all who reply.

You can drop off all your rainbows at my place in Ottawa

Joking aside...the main thing you want to worry about (unless you are not leaving for months yet) is the snakes getting too hot in the car. I don't know how large your collection is but it may be safer and easier for the snakes to ship them to Alberta by air. Either arrange for a friend to send them after you arrive in Alberta or ship them to somebody you know and trust in Alberta who can take care of them for 10 days.

Otherwise, you want your snakes to stay in a relatively constant temperature...not too hot or cold. (75-85F is a good range, if none of the snakes have been fed at least a week before you leave, so they are empty of food). Insert a Thermometer probe into some of the containers the snakes will be transported in to monitor temperatures. Also, you don't want to leave them in the car unattended either. You can provide water at night so they can hydrate.

I am leaving in a few weeks, and I only have one snake to move with. Shipping isn't realistic for me, I have no one here and I have no one there to look after him, so the only options were in the car or sell him. Thank you so much for your imput on this.
