My thoughts on names are somewhat strange. To me the name HAS to fit perfectly. And 99% of the time, no name I think of off hand will fit.

The first thing I tend to do is think of names from books I've read. Something about the names authors choose that just pop. Sometimes I'll look for the name of something similar. For example, I named my juvie mali uromastyx "Fantus" after a "fire drake" (a small dragon-like lizard-thing) from Raymond E Feist's books.

If that doesn't work, what I tend to do is just go online and do a search on "names". Theres quite a few sites out there for all sorts of names including those from other countries and cultures. I called my (now late) russian tortoise "Yevgeni" (russian for Eugene).
I've even found sites with lists of pet names.
I basically just keep looking until a name catches my eye and it looks "right" to me.

Sometimes I look for something desribing the animal, sometimes I just look randomly.
Heh, sometimes I chose something I think the ANIMAL will like. I call the hyla versicolor (grey tree frog) who lives on my porch "Lehmanni" because I thought he might think it was a "tough" name (its a species of posion dart frog)

Yeah, I know I know...I'm kinda wierd.
Lucky for me, I chose "Ana" for my new african house snake...only had to browse the name sites for 20 minutes this time

A brown snake eh? Cute little guy...girl...do you know the gender?
How about Sutek (Soo-teck) or Set?
Ernie? Elmer?
Emer (ee-mer) (gaelic: meaning swift)?
Ettyan (Et-ee-ahn) (a name of an assassin in my best friends novel he wrote )?
Gustav (scandanavian)?

Shrug...

I think Set (or any variant thereof) is WAY over the top for a brown snake. You don't want them getting too much of an ego. They'll start biting and demanding caviar for lunch.
My horned adder is actually named Setekh, but having been born in Egypt, I figured he had a claim to it.
You should name the brown snake 'Jeeves' if it's a boy or 'Thisbe' if it's a girl.

Sure give the snake a complex

Next thing you know that brown snake is gonna be walking around with his nose in the air saying "Pip pip! Cheerio!"

How about Gargantua? Gormagnon? Quetzlcoatl? Ooo...i like that last one...

lol Nicodemus. I'm as bad as you when it comes to picking out names. I'll spend hours searching for the perfect name. I still do not have names for my Greek tortoises.

DemonFrog Sep 26, 2003 09:34 AM

Call one of your greek tortoises jebbadia(like on the simpsons) i'm saying this because i'm crazy.

You could find the first name of either of the two people the snake is named after. The snake is named Storeria dekayi after two people whose last names were Storer and Dekay.

That seems more apropos that naming a 6 inch snake after a mythological giant creature.
