Spider wobble...

SouthernSerpent Jul 08, 2010 06:57 PM

Tuesday night my wife text me while I was at work to inform me that our spider ball that we have only had since January had died. He was a totally healthy snake other than the head wobble, that after some research we discovered was actually on the extreme end of the spectrum. I believe that this is the reason that he passed. He was a beautiful 400 gram specimen. Has anyone else had severe case(s) of head wobble contribute to death in spider balls? I think that with the head wobble problem being a constant in this morph, we will not be participating in anymore purchases of them. It's too hard for either of us to watch the wobble and spin and not wonder what is going on in that little mind as it bobbles and turns. I do miss him in the fact that he was beautiful, but I think he was better off in passing away. One day I will get around to posting some pictures of him for everyone to see him. He was or first ball morph, and I was proud of him.

never saw or heard of one dieing from the dreaded ''wobble''....sorry for the loss....that sucks...spiders wobble...I hate it...it sucks....but I have a bunch of them in different hets and colors.....so I am stuck with them....I am going to throw pins on the mix more and more....lots of pins....just look at BHB pages and see why.....you could also try woma ....with woma and pin you can make all kinds of cool stuff....and not see them walk around and eat ,upside down and sideways....while wobbling.....!!!....

...good luck....

think mojo spider x blast.........I'll probably get 3 male spiders and a pastel male.....!!!...and 2 normals?....

So sorry to hear of your loss, I can tell he was a favorite and he will be missed greatly. I hope you won't judge all Spiders by this experience. Some do not wobble and some wobble just a bit. All are beautiful morphs that when combined with other morphs make really neat combos.

Just wondering if you had just fed your Spider prior to his passing?

No. We had not. We were going to feed him again this week after I returned home from work.

I own a Spinner, a Spider het for Albino and a Honeybee. They are going to be a big part of my future pairings. Only because I think they are the prettiest pattern Ball Python out there. To me they are like the canvas and the other BPs are the paint. I am sorry for your loss. It would hurt immensely to lose any snake that I work so hard to take care of.

Regards,
Bill Rubin

If the wobble killed Spiders they would all be dead.. Some would just die slower than others.. I am sorry for your loss but I would bet dollars to doughnuts it wasnt from the head wobble. Jay

Which is worth more now the dollar or the donut? When I was a kid delivering newspapers, most mornings I went to the local bakery and got a sack full for about 50 cents, not anymore

jaymiller242 Jul 09, 2010 06:19 PM

Boy isnt that the truth Mike, I guess that saying is about as out dated as the price I was referring to on the doughnuts...lol. Now it was a long time ago when I was in middle school and Jr High(1968 or so)but I also remember stopping at the bakery about 2 blocks from the school a couple of mornings a week and buying the (fresh)day old doughnuts from the afternoon before that didnt sell that day.. 0.5 cents a piece...lol. Of course Hershey bars were also 5 or 8 cents, buble gum was a penny and you could actually buy these things called Pixi Styx that were nothing but pure flavored sugar in a paper tube and suck them down without Government approval or interference...lol. Funny but sad how things have changed.. Talk soon I hope, Jay from Sunny AZ

I would have to agree with jay. Wobbles are very common with spiders and combos that include spiders; however, I would have a hard time being convinced that it is the cause of death. As someone how has a small collection and have had the misfortune of losing an animal, I can tell you that I have had animals that looked healthy and young who died (less then 5 years old). It sucks, but the real solution is to get a necropsy done, and see what comes back (which sometimes may not come back with anything more valuable then what you could observe from looking at the specimen). I don't want to sound like I am jumping on you during your time of loss, but I was very concerned about head wobbles before I got my bumble bee and contacted many major breeders about it, and never found a report from them that said it is fatal. My guess is there was something going on internally that never appeared to surface, which is the real cause of death. You must remember, even in captivity these animals live by the rules of survival, which says only the strong survive so if you are sick you try to hide it as best as possible.

I am truly sorry for your loss, and trust me really know how you feel, I hope that you can continue to find a joy in this hobby and not hold this against all spider gene carriers.

Matt

sho220 Jul 10, 2010 06:53 AM

Did you have a necropsy done? Just my opinion but I'd be more worried about what really could have caused it's death unless you have some way of confirming it was the spider wobble..which I've never heard of but I guess isn't out of the question...?

Shadow4108 Jul 10, 2010 05:33 PM

i too worry about the spider wobble having adverse affects, but someone on here had a very excellent point. If the wobble was fatal, there would be very few spiders out on the market.
