For a change on here. Some actual Apalachicola Kings....

Great looking kings, Sean. That area is awesome for its getula. I'm sure there are other nice things to find there as well.

Many nice things Ross. But I do feel the kings are pretty special here.
Are these wild caught? They are beautiful!

Yep, all found in the wild. Didn't keep all of them though. Much prettier than some of this deli produced stuff too!
Killer stuff Sean!, and excellent shots as well

cool....all sweet looking....nice face shots...
???...the first animal....consider it a goini or a getula?...
I used to have what they sold to me as "Apalachicola" kings but I always thought they were easterns .....hmmmm...they were chocolate with gold banding...red tinted tips at times...and for yearssss I bred a bunch of these...1 male 2 females and all the kids looked alike....I got them from Serpenco in like 1990.....
you think eastern or goin's?...
thanxx......

I don't use the term "goini" but rather just call the whole population Apalachicola Kings. It's really interesting what pops out within their range. I'll have to do another post and show the offspring from a gravid female I found last year. If I didn't tell you where she came from, you would say it's a typical Eastern king...yet she popped out some really cool looking offspring including one striped animal!
Oh btw, do you have any pics of those you got from SerpenCo? Sounds like typical Eastern Kings to me.
no pics man...that was before Al Gore invented the internet even....I may have a paper shot I could copy....hmmmm....
they were sold to me as eatserns ....Apalachicolas...as I said...they were brown and gold and looked just like that first pic or whatever....
......all the kids for years were all the same....all of them, not one variation actually.....so I guess they were easterns by that ......fastest hatch rate for them was 43 days.....now I got Temporalis that laid second clyutch 29 days from first clutch and they hatched fast....I'll have to check how fast.....not quite the 43 I think....
....Thanxx...good luck...cool snakes.....I don't have room for 20 Florida ssp of stuff....they don't sell for crap here in PA either.....I have friends that bred all kinds of brook's...noone wanted them.....150$ snakes for $20....still went to Ian G....
...have fun

Sounds like you had some wide banded Easterns. With the Apalachicolas you'd see a definite variation amongst the offspring. And then you have that speckling which varies and doesn't show up at first. One of the offspring I had last year looked like a typical Eastern when she hatched and now she is almost completely speckled.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Now thats what I am talking about Sean.Outstanding man.

What kinda locality is the king you posted Shannon?

I'll guess that Shannon has what I have from L.A. Co. (Grease king)His is a bit darker, though.

But it could be a Yuma. Not sure how you would tell the difference with the babies. What locality, Shannon?

That is what i thought. But then I seen some his his dark yuma kings so i wasn't sure.

I think it's one of his darker "yuma" kings. But they definitely look REAL similar to those "greaser's" for sure.

Oh thats right. lol It looks like its impossible to tell the difference between the two as juveniles.
Sorry to take your thread in another direction, Sean. I read all about you in Hubbs book. Sounds like you are the main or one of the main guys looking for kings in that area. If I lived out there, I'd be doing the same thing too.
-----

Yeah, Sean, Parker, Justice, Enge, and several others have all been capturing southeastern locality forms of getula for quite a while.
And again, I will also have to say that Hubbs' getula book is THE best on planet earth.....without exception!!

When you see this you realize what's been lost with all the line and selective breeding. My goini haven't looked like that for a decade. While I like captive lines and feel they are technically "prettier" Those are damn handsome serpents and exactly what attracted me to the form in the first place.
A selectively bred type for comparison.

I agree Tony. Most of what I've found don't look much like what's offered today by breeders. Whatever the reasons, I can't help but be fascinated with the natural, wild forms that got people so interested in them in the first place. So much variation!
It was the variation that got me too. I envey that you get the opportunity to witness it first hand.
