I am keeping my mealworm beetles on oatmeal (not the instant cook kind, just the plain in tub cheap kind). In the past I used oat bran/wheat germ. Seems to be working okay, but make sure you give the beetles a moisture source. I wondered before if they were like some insect adult forms where all they do is breed and die and not eat, but I added some munchies in their cage and they ate it up fast, so they do eat and need moisture as beetles.

But for mealworm larvas, oatmeal bedding is not good for gutloading them. So feed the larvas better to make sure they are nutrious for your reptile.

It will probably work, but if you want cheap substrate get some wheat bran from the feed store. Largest bag in the place for the lowest cost. $12 for a bag 4'x2'x8"
