URGENT - Injured Baby Corn

TammyIs5150 Jul 12, 2010 09:01 PM

This afternoon I rescued a baby corn from a lady who said her mother got this corn snake for her daughter but it's too skinny and she no longer wants it. Upon picking it up, it looks like it was injured. Here are three pictures of it and I was would love to get some opinions/suggestions on this little guy. Currently, I have him set up with a few caves, I did not feed him yet thinking he may be too stressed to be moved to yet another new cage so I was going to wait a couple of days for him to acclimate to his new cage. I heard that you can give snakes egg yolk with a dropper to give them some protein. Is this true? Anything else I should be doing? Thanks in advance!

I applaud your efforts, but that snake is not very likely to survive. It appears severely dehydrated along with being under nurished. I am not sure it would survive eating a pink.

That said, if you do want to try, you need to soak it in water or even a base pedialyte solution in the hopes of re-hydrating it. I would soak it in the solution/water (2) times for an hour each time. Maybe the next day try offering a pinky head only. If it takes it, try the same sized meal every 5 days for two weeks. Then if the little guy is still around, offer a full small pink and go from there.

Sorry for any spelling errors, it is later and I am sleepy.

Good luck

That snake is so dehydrated and malnourished I am not sure if the injury is as severe as it appears, or if what I am seeing is mainly attributed to poor, husbandry and IMO outright neglect. It is admirable you are trying to do something for the snake. As Camby suggested, get it hydrated as quickly as possible. It appears water was not even offered to the snake. After a day or so of hydration, offer it food. Its system is probably very compromised at this point and it may be hard to get it feeding regardless. If it does take a pink head on its own and holds it down, chances are much better it will survive. As far as the injury, lots of baby snakes get deli cup injuries during packing, etc. It will probably alwsys be visible, but not necessarily life threatning. Only time will tell at this point.

Good Luck

Yes, it really doesn't look very promising there. The spine also seems to be broken or deformed too.
