california toad hibernation

bee_rad Sep 23, 2003 10:35 PM

ive had my california toad for three years. the prior years he has not hibernated as much as he has been lately. he was buried for about twoo weeks and i dug him up and fed him. he went back into hibernation and its been about a week. i think i remember that they hibernate when they are stressed? or it might be too cold? any info would be good. thanks.

Where I live mine don't hibernate really except for 2 weeks. In the wild here they might hibernate when it get's dry or very cold. Honestly the subspecies inhabits a wide range of temps. and conditions and it will matter if yours is So. Ca., Sierra Nevada, No. Ca. etc. Mainly it will act differently. i.e. Sierra Nevada ones are more diurnal, etc.
